DirecTV Won't Offer Shine Fights
by Michael David SmithSo much for that.
A day after we noted that DirecTV, alone among major carriers, had chosen to offer Friday night's Shine Fights pay-per-view card but not Saturday night's Shark Fights card, DirecTV has changed course.
With Shine Fights' event moving from a sanctioned show in Virginia to an unsanctioned show on a tribal territory in Oklahoma, DirecTV decided not to offer Shine Fights anymore. Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jameel Massouh and Brett Cooper both are walking away from Bellator in Milwaukee with wins after both finished their opponents on Thursday night. After a back and forth round, Mamalis picked up Massouh for a takedown, which turned out to be a mistake. Massouh jumped guard and grabbed a tight guillotine. Mamalis lasted for as long as he could, but tapped out at 4:27 in the first round.Massouh, a WEC veteran, filled in at the last minute on Bellator's televised card, facing Mamalis, who lost on in early September in Bellator's bantamweight tournament. Breaking out of the comfort zone
As skydivers, one thing we learn early on is that, in order to improve, you’ve gotta step out of your comfort zone. I mean, hello, skydiving in itself is stepping out of that zone…that’s part of the whole point, is it not?

Complaining won't get you far: Marquardt and Hardy on wrestling
Two different fighters have taken their shots at wrestling's place in MMA. It started with former UFC welterweight contender Dan Hardy, who complained about wrestling dominating MMA after his countrymen, Andre Winner and Nick Osipczak, both lost in decisions after UFC 118. Rather than saying 'oh, these guys can't wrestle', I think the problem is there's beginning to be too much wrestling in UFC Octagon, not too little of it in the gym. There are a lot of people out there calling themselves 'UFC fighters' who are nothing of the kind. In the UFC, you should go for finishes. He must not have watched the Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen fight, where Sonnen -- an elite wrestler -- lost because he aggressively went after Silva. In the same article on thisisNottingham.co.uk, Hardy says how he has spent three months in the U.S. trying to shore up his wrestling. A whole three months to face fighters who have been wrestling for a lifetime. Japanese fighter Shinya Aoki, who fights both for DREAM and Strikeforce, piled on to Hardy's comments. From AOL Fanhouse: "The American wrestling style - punching a little bit, getting a takedown and moving to side control to win the round has no risk. It's an easier fight. It's just using the judges. They don't even have to worry about injuries or anything like that. There is no risk."Aoki must have never seen a match when a fighter gets kneed while going for a takedown, or gets caught in a guillotine. Apparently, he doesn't perceive that risk. Aoki and Hardy both prefer complaining. Nate Marquardt and Kenny Florian are both fighters who would rather improve themselves than complain.Marquardt, who is fighting Rousimar Palhares at Ultimate Fight Night 22 next week, was beaten by a wrestler in Chael Sonnen."I was unable to defend the takedowns in my last fight, and that's why I lost the fight," Marquardt commented. "Now I'm going to be more prepared to defend the takedown no matter who I'm fighting, and I worked hard on my wrestling and I continue to work hard on my wrestling."Kenny Florian took a similar track, hiring a wrestling coach just days after his wrestling-filled loss to Gray Maynard. If Hardy and Aoki are so concerned, then they need to train to neutralize their opponent's wrestling, or knock them out or submit them to win. Instead of complaining about the guy across from them in the cage, they could just get the KO themselves.

Josh Barnett Signs With Strikeforce
Filed under: Strikeforce, NewsJosh Barnett, who over the past 14 months has slipped from No. 2 heavyweight in mixed martial arts to barely even relevant -- without even losing a fight -- has signed with Strikeforce in an attempt, at age 32, to get some meaningful fights while he still can.

TV troubles plague upstart MMA promotions
This week, MMA fans have many option of watching live MMA on television. Of course, depending on where they live and which cable provider they use, they may not have much MMA to watch at all. Shine Fights, who had to make a last-minute venue change after licensing problems arose in Virginia, will not be sold as a pay-per-view on DirecTV. According to MMA Fighting, the one-night tournament in Oklahoma will not be shown because DirecTV is concerned that it will be canceled at the last minute. Shark Fights, the Saturday night card that will feature Keith Jardine's first bout since being cut by the UFC, will also not be shown via DirecTV. Other cable providers, including Comcast, will still show both events for $29.99.Televison troubles are not limited to pay-per-view events, as Bellator's deal with Fox Sports Net is not the sweetheart deal it appeared to be. In the promotion's (and my) hometown of Chicago, Bellator has been getting the shaft. The fights don't normally air until 11 p.m. local time, well after the fights are over. This week, it's not airing until after midnight, at 12:30 a.m. The only way for MMA fans to combat this is to get loud. If you're a DirecTV subscriber, call or email them to complain. If the Bellator fights were pre-empted by a replay of a Astros-Pirates game, call your local Fox affiliate to tell them this is not OK.
Heavy on looks, the 'Ultimate Women Challenge' should get a TV slot
We have no idea if more than a few of the women can actually fight and the show may be absolutely dreadful but it looks like the 'Ultimate Women Challenge' nailed one area. They put together a nice looking collection of women and that may be the only way the show actually makes to its intended destination, NBC. It may not make hardcore MMA fans happy and there will certainly be a good portion of the female MMA community that won't like the show but it's probably taken the right approach. The show, which no surprise appears to be a female version of the UFC's "Ultimate Fighter, was supposed to debut this month. No word yet officially. We tracked down this Tracy Lee photoshoot from what looks like a portion of the show filmed at The Gun Store in Las Vegas. The women are certainly fit and could sell well on television. It also has a big time host in Joanna Krupa of "Dancing with the Stars" fame. Longtime MMA chick Amber Nichole also has a role on the show. That should be a sight. As you can see she's gotten a lot smoother. Nichole's featured in this meeting of the minds with rising MMA media star Skee outside the Throwdown Gym in Las Vegas.
Maia outgrapples Miranda to unanimous decision at UFC 118
In a battle of two jiu-jitsu geniuses, Demian Maia won by unanimous decision, earning a score of 30-27 on all three judges' cards. Maia came close to submitting Miranda early, taking him down and applying a choke, but Miranda shook him off his back. The two finished the round off from their feet, but quickly returned to the canvas in the second round. Maia took Miranda down easily early in the round, and showed off why he is one of the sport's best grapplers. Controlling Miranda the entire time, Maia applied both an arm triangle and an arm bar on Miranda, but Miranda was able to defend both.Miranda's coaches -- including UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva -- begged Miranda to "let it go" in the final round, but it didn't happen. Miranda was tentative, and Maia took Miranda down and came close to an arm bar near the end of the round. Miranda spinned out of the attempt, but it was too little, too late. With such great BJJ players fighting, a submission was expected. However, their grappling canceled out, and the fighter who had better control won. This was Maia's first fight back since losing in a title bout to Miranda's coach, Silva.

Heavyweight phenom Duffee cut from the UFC
Our last UFC image of Todd Duffee, in the black shortsTodd Duffee's career with the UFC lasted 12 minutes and 39 seconds. The heavyweight who shot into prominence after knocking out Tim Hague in seven seconds was cut from the UFC.The 25-year-old couldn't sustain the meteoric rise that happened after he broke the UFC fastest knockout record. He suffered an injury before a scheduled bout with Paul Buentello at UFC 107. At UFC 114, Duffee beat up on Mike Russow for 2 1/2 rounds before Russow came back to land a perfect right, knocking Duffee out. Sports Illustrated's Josh Gross reported that there were some problems between UFC president Dana White and Duffee, but that this is hardly the end of Duffee's MMA career. Duffee's manager Alex Davis said that Todd will continue to fight."It's unfortunate, but Todd's an asset and he will keep on fighting. He is a young kid and gets a lot of attention," Davis said.Duffee's appeal to any MMA organization is clear. He's a young and exciting fighter who looks like he was the hero of a 1950s movie about truth, goodness and the American Way. Strikeforce is strongest at heavyweight, so he would be a natural fit there.
