Japanese stars Omigawa, Yamamoto to fight at UFC 126

UFC 126 will feature the Octagon debut debut and return of two fighters who have made names for themselves in Japanese MMA: Michihiro Omigawa and Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto.

Omigawa will face Chad Mendes, a rising star from Urijah Faber's camp with a strong wrestling background. Omigawa comes into the fight on a five-bout winning streak, including this unorthodox armbar submission of Cole Escovedo. Skip to around 2:30 to catch it:

At 35, he stands in stark contrast of Mendes' youth. He has a background in judo, so when that is paired with Mendes' wrestling, a ground fight will ensure. Don't expect for this bout, scheduled to air on Spike before the pay-per-view card, to turn into a slugfest.

UPDATE: Somehow, I forgot Omigawa's first stint in the UFC. Go easy on me -- I'm in the middle of Snowpocalypse.

Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto will make his UFC debut after an up and down streak few years in Japan. The son of an Olympic wrestler, Kid didn't fight in 2008 so that he could try for a spot on the Japanese Olympic team. His dreams of wrestling in Beijing were crushed when he dislocated his elbow in a qualifying tournament.

When he did return to MMA in 2009, he suffered a shocking loss to Joe Warren, who was fighting just his second bout. That was followed by a loss to Masanori Kanehara on New Year's Eve. He finally got back in the winning column with this knockout of Federico Lopez. (Skip to the last 30 seconds of the video for the good stuff.)

Kid, who went to high school and won three state wrestling championships in Arizona, will face Demetrious Johnson on the undercard.

White calls Silva-Belfort presser '30 minutes of bull[expletive]'

Anderson Silva is a prickly guy. He always has been and probably always will be when it comes to dealing with large media gatherings. It was typical Silva yesterday at the UFC 126 press conference with several one word answers and even more cliches. The UFC's middleweight champ did little to hype the card with the spoken word. That may have upset Dana White in the past, but not anymore. What will upset him is if Silva shows up to fight Vitor Belfort, but really doesnt.

"To be honest, when I gotta sit through these press conferences and listen to one-word answers ... we've all come to learn that's what's going to happen. You know you're never going to get crazy [expletive] out of him or what he's really thinking," White said (3:25 mark).

"I don't give a [expletive] if he sits there and doesn't say a word for an entire press conference. As long as he shows up Saturday night and fights. I'm fine with that. At the end of the day, we don't pay 50 dollars to hear him speak."

White is revved up about the fight, but also knows that with Silva that "showing up to fight" can mean different things.

"I'm gonna be honest, this thing could be the most dynamic, incredible [expletive] fight we've ever seen or the worst staring competition in the history of mankind. All I care about is that both these guys come out and let it go, and fight the fight we know we could possibly see," said White.

He also shot down the non-chalent messages delivered by the fighters on Wednesday. Both Silva and

"I'm gonna give you my assessment of the press conference. We just sat through 30 minutes of bull[expletive]," White said (0:08 mark). "I think that (the fighters saying) 'this doesn't mean anything and this is just another (fight). Let me tell you how big this thing is in Brazil. These guys live in Brazil, it's huge and everybody's talking about it there."

White thinks it's a huge fight in the careers of both fighters.

"There's a ton of pressure on both guys," White said. "Not only for what's at stake, butwhere they from and how big this fight is down there. So that 30 minutes of bull[expletive] we just listened to, none of it's true."

Borderline insane Nick Diaz isn't the only reason to watch Strikeforce tomorrow night

The main event at tomorrow night's Strikeforce is guaranteed to deliver a dramatic finish. Nick Diaz brings a classic volume boxing style to the cage against Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. Santos is your typical brawler, who swings from the hip. Someone is losing via KO or TKO. But as Cage Potato notes, the Diaz fight isn't the only thing that makes Strikeforce's latest offering intriguing. CP lists the other reasons to tune in:

Herschel Walker, Genetic Freak
[...] Did I mention he’s 48? Now, in MMA that may not seem special as we have our own version of a 48-year old wonder in Randy Couture, but Couture looks every year of 48. Walker, on the other hand, could pass for a man in his early 30s and has the physique that men in their athletic primes dream to attain. Herschel Walker, at 48, might be the greatest physical specimen to step foot in an MMA ring or cage…ever.

Roger Gracie, Ground Wizard
The Gracie name is synonymous with the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Their legacy extends back to the inaugural UFC some 17 years ago. [...] Fans of BJJ should take notice of his skills, especially when it gets to the ground…and if Gracie wants it to, it will. Gracie is only 28 years of age and still has a future in MMA and potential matchups at 205 with Dan Henderson, “King Mo” Lawal, and the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Rafael Cavalcante.

Momentum
Strikeforce has been able to pick up some much needed momentum after a subpar 2010. It began with the December 4th show that went up head-to-head with the UFC. Though the UFC show won the ratings war, Strikeforce had overwhelming shown itself as the better show that night. Then an announcement of a Heavyweight Tournament with 8 of the top 25 heavyweights in the world was made. [...] There’s a lot of momentum behind the Strikeforce brand, the question is, can they keep it up?

There's one more we'd like to add, regardless of a win or loss, Nick Diaz's postfight press conference comments are a must listen. He's been unbelievable in the lead up to the fight.

Diaz is tired of hearing about a possible against middleweight Jason Miller.

"I’d be happy to move up, I’d like to get paid for it you know? I don’t like how people try to say that I didn’t accept the fight with (Mayhem) Miller because I was too small. I never said anything about that," Diaz said. "I said if I’m going to go off track and screw with my whole season, it’s going to screw with my whole year, it’s going to screw with my capabilities of fighting at 170lbs. If I’m going to do that I’d like to get paid in full. I would like to have a reason for doing that. Not just do it at everybody else’s convenience.”

Diaz isn't making a ton of money for these fights and he's had enough.

“I’d like to get paid something extra. Double, triple, something crazy for me to do something extra that would screw up my weight to fight at that weight," Diaz said. "[...] “(Manny) Pacquaio’s making 40 [expletive] million dollars, GSP’s making a couple million dollars. I’m over here [expletive] driving a Honda and my [expletive] breaking down? [expletive] all you mother[expletive]."

Diaz is also tired of hearing about Georges St. Pierre's dominance.

"That’s what I’m saying. They’ve made easy fights for those guys. These guys have got like six or seven fights. Like all easy fights. I’ve never got to fight a guy like (Paul Daley) they brought into fight Josh Koscheck," Diaz said during the Strikeforce teleconference. "So when you bring up fighters like that and tell me they are the best fighters in the world it’s a [expletive] joke. Those guys are all ranked now but I was here first. So let’s fight then. Let’s make it happen, you know?"

According to Diaz, the UFC is propping up phony contenders for GSP.

“People think this guy is better than me and it’s [expletive]. He went five rounds with Josh Koscheck," Diaz said. "I just told you about Josh Koscheck, right? Why shouldn’t I get to fight him? Why are you saying he’s unavailable? Because we fight for different companies?”

We know Diaz is nutty, but this is where he has completely off his rocker. The fighter should be well aware of the fact that the UFC will never co-promote a fight with another organization. He was with the UFC in the past and is fully familiar with the ways of the powerful promotion. If his goal is to push for change, fine, but stop acting like this is boxing with promoters like Gary Shaw, Lou DiBella, Golden Boy, Top Rank and Don King working together on fights.

'Jacare' Souza keeps belt with win over Lawler at Strikeforce

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza defended his Strikeforce middleweight championship belt using the world-class jiu-jitsu he is known for, submitting Robbie Lawler with a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Jacare took Lawler down early in the first round, but when he switched to a guillotine, Lawler was able to get back to his feet. From there, violent stand-up erupted with Lawler throwing big strikes. He used a knee and a combination of punches to knock him to the ground. For some reason, Lawler followed Jacare to the ground, and was controlled on the ground until they were stood up with just 0:25 left in the round. Lawler finished the round strong, throwing strikes until Jacare tried for another takedown.

In the second round, Jacare controlled Lawler on the ground. He punished Lawler with strikes and tried for several submission attempts, but Lawler showed evolution in his fight game, working out of each and every submission attempt with one of MMA's best grapplers.

That submission defense magic disappeared in the third round, as Jacare took Lawler down early. He took his back, slapped on a body triangle and then slipped in a rear naked choke. Lawler tapped at 2:00 in the third.

The difference in this fight was takedown defense. Though Lawler is now training in Arizona with former All-American wrestlers Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway, he couldn't stop four of Jacare's six takedown attempts.

Souza is undefeated with Strikeforce after fighting for Dream and Brazilian-based promotions, earning a record of 14-2. Lawler, who just signed a new contract with Strikeforce, is 18-7.

Hominick fighting for title shot, Roop isn't; Is that fair?

Mark Hominick is just over a day away from the second biggest fight of his life. If he downs George Roop at Fight for the Troops 2, Hominick gets a shot at the biggest fight of his career, a title shot against Jose Aldo, the UFC featherweight champ. Roop's situation is different. Even with a win, there is no title shot. Essentially this is just another fight ... for now.

MMA fans have grown accustomed to title eliminators, so why switch the approach? Roop is the guy who could be complaining, but he's not. He understands the reality of the 145-pound division.

"I don't take it too much as disrespect," Roop told MMAjunkie radio. "I understand he's the No. 1 contender, and if he can get past me – (and that's) a big 'can' with a question mark on it – I do think he deserves it."

Hominick, 28, has been long regarded as a possible title contender. His striking is top notch and he's shored up most of his weaknesses on the ground. The Canadian has won four straight, but you could make the argument that Roop's recent opponents have actually been more impressive that the guy line for a title shot.

"But if you look at the caliber of fighters I've been fighting – (former champ) Eddie Wineland, (Leonard) Garcia on a week-and-a-half's notice, and Chan Sung Jung, who (supposedly) couldn't be knocked out – I fought top-caliber guys, and I step up and take fights."

Roop knows he can't talk himself into a title shot before the fight, but he does control his own destiny tomorrow night. A devastating win on Spike TV may force the promotion's hand. If offered Aldo, he won't shy away from the fight.

"It's a big deal, and I think Mark deserves it if he gets past me. But that's a big if," Roop said. "I don't plan on losing this fight. It'd be nice for me to fight Jose Aldo, as well. We'll see how Jan. 22 plays out."

This is actually a return to the UFC for Hominick (19-8). A relatively small 145 pounder, he actually fought twice for the promotion as a lightweight back in 2006. He went 2-0 against Jorge Gurgel and Yves Edwards.

Roop has an example to follow. Josh Grispi was the last guy fighting for his shot at Aldo. The 23-year-old was beaten soundly by Dustin Poirier at UFC 125. He's also accustomed to being the underdog. Roop knocked off Internet sensation and T-shirt maven, Chan Sung Jung, "The Korean Zombie" in his last fight.

Strikeforce Diaz vs. Cyborg Results: Roger Gracie Beats Trevor Prangley

by Michael David SmithRoger Gracie may be the best submission grappler in the world, and now he has his biggest win to date in mixed martial arts, having submitted Trevor Prangley Saturday at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg.

Gracie sunk in a beautiful rear-naked choke that forced Prangley to tap out four minutes, 19 seconds into the first round.

"Everything happened as planned," Gracie said after the fight.

Diaz just wants big fights, not interested in 'maturing'

Nick Diaz put a licking on brawler Evangelista Santos, but the prefight wasn't engulfed by the champ's trademark trash talk. Diaz is genuine. Just because he rips most  opponents doesn't mean that it's some sort of ploy to fire himself up or sell the fight. So when he was asked if not ripping "Cyborg" was a byproduct of maturing, Diaz answered with his typical brutal honesty.

"No, not at all," Diaz said (1:22 mark). "[In the past] I had to [expletive] with people. We had something between us."

Diaz said he respected Cyborg as well as past opponents like Robbie Lawler. That wasn't the case with guys like KJ Noons, Scott Smith and Frank Shamrock.

"That was that and now it's over with. Sometimes you get into some conflict and that's happened to me more than once, so now everyone feels as if I 've gone and matured or grown up or somethin, but that's just the way fighting is," Diaz said. "If you're going to make it personal, then it's really going to be a personal thing. It's already personal. The guy who wins is going to go on and make a lot more money."

Make no mistake about it, the "old" Diaz will return if Showtime/Strikeforce decides to make a fight against Paul Daley. Daley likes to fan the flames and already has his own bad guy tag after his exile from the UFC for sucker punching Josh Koscheck following their fight at UFC 113.

Diaz sounds confident that he'll be fine against the British slugger.

"I see myself putting punches on him," Diaz said. "Maybe him trying to take me down too and getting caught in a choke. He could run from me and I could run him down. I'll run him down and take him down and beat him on the ground. I could see that fight going a lot of different ways."

Diaz knows Daley's reputation as a one-dimensional fighter.

"I'm not really impressed with Paul Daley as a mixed martial artist," Diaz said. "He's got great standup and he's got good knockout power. I'm sure he knows what's going to happen if he steps in there and fights me."

He re-stated that he'll fight Jason Miller, but he needs to get paid a little extra if he's going to meet the 185 pounder at middleweight.

"This is hard stuff. I train hard everyday. I work more than eight hours days every day," Diaz said. "And they're harder than your eight-hour days holding a camera. It's different. You can't do this, what I do. I think that money talks."

There you have it. Diaz drops a little trash on all us media tough guys. He's earned the right to say whatever he wants. He keeps backing it up in the cage and putting on entertaining fights. Strikeforce hit a home run when it re-signed Diaz.

Fedor Emelianenko training on a horse for Feb. 12 bout

Oh, why hello, there. I am Fedor Emelianenko, the greatest fighter in the world. It's so nice to meet you. Wait, what did you just say? Fabricio Wer-who?

That's funny. You ... you, my friend, are funny. I did lose to Werdum. It is true. But did you hear about the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix?

I was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard about. The chance to fight Fabricio again? Or Alistair Overeem? Yes, that made me think.

I have to win that grand prix.

I'm going to show who the best heavyweight in the world is, even if it means I have to spar in a Stalin-era pool hall. (No, wait. Why am I here? I'm the greatest fighter in the world, and I'm training at a place where any Sergei Schmo can come in off the street to play nine-ball?)

I'll do it for you, my friend. I'll do it for you, and of course, to impress the ladies.

You'll see on Feb. 12, my friend.

All pictures courtesy of Fedor's website. Thanks to Fightlinker for the heads up.

Nick Diaz Submits Evangelista Cyborg Santos in a Strikeforce Brawl

by Michael David SmithStrikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz got a tougher challenge than expected from Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos Saturday night in San Jose, but after brawling for nearly 10 minutes, Diaz submitted Cyborg with a textbook arm bar with just seconds remaining in the second round.

Diaz improved his record to 24-7, and he's now on a nine-fight winning streak. Diaz isn't the best welterweight in the world (that honor belongs to Georges St. Pierre), but he's unquestionably the best welterweight outside the UFC.

"I respect the way he fights," Diaz said of Cyborg. "He don't play around. He came out here and fought me."

Flooded Out

About a month ago San Diego got hit pretty hard with a shit load of rain. My studio fell victim to the whether and was flooded out. My wife and I went through the wreckage and cleared it out but a few things were lost. I called up Swank to see if he had any extra space down at Tumyeto and he said to come on down and see if I could use a spot to set up shop. I got a new studio going(thanx to Swank and Barker) where I will be shooting portraits, product catalogs and filming one of our newest segments on the website titled "The Speak Easy". The first one should drop within the next few weeks. Its a video interview that will come out twice a month with your favorite wood riders. Cory Kennedy came down to the new studio to film his upcoming Speak Easy and I shot this portrait to break in the new spot.

Herschel Walker vs. Scott Carson Fight Video

by Michael David Smith

Herschel Walker improved to 2-0 as an MMA fighter with a first-round technical knockout victory over Scott Carson on Saturday night at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg. The fight video is above.

Walker, the former NFL star who was a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at Georgia and also dabbled in Olympic bobsledding, made short work of Carson, who could do little more than cover up and try not to get too badly hurt.

Walker indicated after the fight that he hopes to fight for Strikeforce again. At age 48, he's not ready to quit fighting.
