Fired UFC fighter Duffee lists the positives of the Strikeforce takeover

Todd Duffee might be the last guy you'd expect to look at the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce through rose-colored glasses. That's exactly what he did when he posted a long message on the Underground Forum.

Duffee, a hot shot prospect in the UFC's heavyweight division, was released last year. The reason has never officially been released, but it was pretty obvious a series of run-ins with UFC management didn't help his cause. Duffee's only 25 and it sounds like he's gained a little more perspective on the sport since his ouster. Here are some of the things that he listed as the positives of Zuffa swallowing up Strikeforce.

1. My first thought was all the great possible match-ups we will get to see. I understand they will be operating separately for some time but I hope when they say cross promotion they are saying mega fights will happen not just strike force will have a booth at the fan expos.

2. Next women's MMA will get a huge mainstream push I wasn't always a fan but the better they get the more I like it just the same.

3. Some of the greatest fighters in the world won't have to hear the dreaded question of when will you get good enough to be in the UFC and instead get the respect they have already earned.

4. MY FAVORITE positive is that the UG will stop picking teams and stop the endlessly dumb trolling of the UFC is better than strike force and vice versa. And maybe this place will stop being such a wasteland of bitching and crying.

5. More unified rules and possibly better judging due to the fact that Zuffa will have more power to help make those changes.

6. Another step in gaining the same respect the NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, etc.

7. Strikeforce will now have the money to put on more shows meaning guys won't have to sit on the shelf for long periods of time.
More shows means possibly more free shows.

8. More pull within the Japanese market due to Strikeforce's good relations which might save Japanese MMA.

9. The naysayers can now be ignored and we can rest assured that the [heavyweight] tourney will go on.

10. Also the greater possibility of more tournaments in the future as a feeder into the big shows.

11. Possibly better announcing which seems to be a huge complaint. Maybe they buy that fellow off Bellator, Jimmy [Smith] believe is his name. actually both they make a good team.

Do you buy all of that? I think he may be off on the female fighting point. Unless Dana White has a complete change of heart in the next 18-24 mos., females are probably headed back to the minors.

Duffee also clarified that his post wasn't an ass-kissing effort to get him back in the good graces of White and co.

I am not praising the buyout. I like everyone else when they heard of the news sat around and talked about all the negatives. But realizing it did me absolutely no good. I decided to start this thread to see what the positives of the buyout could be jotting down some of my immediate positive thoughts. As in usual fashion, I was met with a bunch of negative uselessly angry posters. This is not to get in good graces with Zuffa. I am a year and many wins away from them remembering my name or face.

UFC 128 KO of Night: Schaub takes next step by stopping ‘Cro Cop’

Brendan Schaub is still a work in progress, but he's got something every fighter would love to possess -- one-punch knockout power.

After a rough, grinder of a fight, waged mostly along the cage, Schaub drilled Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic with a counter right hand. Cro Cop crumbled to the floor and Schaub landed one more finishing punch that bounced the Croatian's head off the floor like a basketball. Referee Herb Dean sprinted across the cage to stop the fight at the 3:44 mark of the third round.

Update: During Saturday night'spostfight press conference, UFC president Dana White said this was probably the last time the 36-year-old Cro Cop would be fighting for the promotion. He's lost two straight fights and lacks the explosiveness and size to compete at the highest level with the new breed heavyweight. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound Schaub, has only been a pro since the middle of 2008.

It wasn't easy for Schaub, who was wary of Cro Cop's devasting left head kick throughout. The former Colorado fullback tried to keep the fight at close quarters. In most of the cases when Cro Cop tried a kick or moved forward with a punch, Schaub (8-1, 4-1 UFC) looked for the clinch or a takedown.

The wily veteran Cro Cop (27-9, 4-5 UFC) did some fine work of his own in those clinch situations along the cage. He landed some nasty short elbows including one in the second that caused Schaub's nose to start leaking blood. He also opened up a cut over Schaub's left eye.

The younger Schaub took the first two rounds, but in the second he had a point taken away for punches to the back of the head.

Schaub, the runner-up on Season 10 of "The Ultimate Fighter," lost in the final to another vet in Roy Nelson. Since then, he's scored three knockout finishes in four victories.

Schaub, who turned 28 Friday, asked Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta for the Knockout of the Night bonus. Through eight fights, his only competition is Erik Koch, who scored a first-round KO of Raphael Assuncao.

Update II: The UFC gave out two KO of the Night bonuses. Schaub and Koch each got $70,000.

Vinny Magalhaes Wins, M-1 Global Makes Its Showtime Debut

Filed under:

A former Ultimate Fighter contestant made short work of an overmatched opponent, and two M-1 champions were crowned, as M-1 had its first live event on Showtime Friday night.

The card was an important one for M-1, marking the first time the promotion got on premium cable without needing to put Fedor Emelianenko on the card and co-promote with Strikeforce, and for the most part the fights delivered: This wasn't the kind of high-quality MMA fans get with major UFC and Strikeforce shows, but the bouts were generally entertaining.

Vinny Magalhaes, known for making it to the final of Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, was by far the best-known fighter on the card. Magalhaes completely outclassed Jake Doerr, taking Doerr's back on the ground easily, sinking in a body triangle and landing punches until the referee stopped the fight, handing Magalhaes a first-round TKO victory.

Video analysis: ‘Lil’ Nog’ hopes to restore reputation of former PRIDE fighters

Back around UFC 66, what ifs were the way of the world in MMA. With a star-filled roster, PRIDE was still thriving in Japan. Hardcore fans and devotees of Japanese fighting swore up and down that if PRIDE fighters ever got their hands on the stars of the UFC, it would be utter destruction.

Following the Dec. 30, 2006 event, Dana White announced the signing of PRIDE superstar Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic," Mitch Moss of ESPNRadio1100 became a hero to every PRIDE fan:

"Is there any fear or concern that by bringing everybody over that they might come over and completely dominate and crush these guys that you have signed up?"

Much of the gathered media laughed, yet many of them were thinking the same thing might happen. After the raucous laughter subsided, White said he wasn't worried because all those fighters would be his and they'd get a chance to compete under the UFC banner.

As it turned out, even Moss asked a great question, but the PRIDE fighters, who were added mostly in 2008 and 2009, far from dominated. It's actually been a tough run for most of them aside from Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, 34, has been pretty successful at 3-1. This weekend at Ultimate Fight Night 24, he faces one of the new breed in 26-year-old former Penn State wrestler Phil Davis.

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to talk about what's happened with the PRIDE fighters and "Lil Nog's" chances against Davis.

UFC 128: Luiz Cane Destroys Eliot Marshall

by Michael David SmithLuiz Cane defeats Eliot Marshall at UFC 128.Luiz Cane absolutely obliterated Eliot Marshall Saturday night at UFC 128, drilling him with a couple of big punches standing up in the early going and then finishing him off with dozens of punches on the ground.

Cane showed that he's just a much better striker than Marshall, who never had much of a chance: Cane has power and accuracy with his punches, and Marshall doesn't have much of anything in the stand-up for a striker of Cane's caliber.

The victory improved Cane's professional MMA record to 11-3, including nine wins by knockout or TKO. Cane had lost two straight fights, but he showed against Marshall that he's back in a big way.

The mental side of UFC 128: Jones is over the mystique of Rua

Jon Jones may be a physical freak, but he's just like most fighters who have to wrestle with the mental side of the game before and during the fight.

The 6-foot-4, 220 pounder has a huge task in front of him in facing MMA legend Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The former PRIDE middleweight and current UFC light heavyweight champ has been in there with some of the top fighters of all time. Jones' top opponents include former Ultimate Fighter contestants Matt Hamill and Ryan Bader.

A quick look at the credentials of both fighters could be pretty intimidating. That's where's Jones' trainer Greg Jackson comes in.

"I was actually getting a little anxiety about being in the title fight," Jones told The Daily. "He said 'Jon listen it's just another fight. "No fight is a big fight. Forget what his name is.'That's the mindset I have now. He really humanized Shogun big time, because I've been a fan of him myself."

You can watch UFC 128 right here on Yahoo!

Jackson said the most important thing is Jones willingness to listen.

"Jon is a student of the game," Jackson said. "Inspiration is a fighter's most precious commodity. For Jon, knowledge and enlightenment seems to be what inspires him, so I'm always quoting strategy books or Eastern philosophy as how it relates to combat."

Jackson is known around the sport as a guru of the MMA mind game. When Jones arrived at his camp in Albuqueque he was a hot shot prospect who wowed with his explosiveness. Jackson has slowly re-programmed Jones' approach in the cage.

"He's getting very good at finishing fights now," said Jackson. "Before he would throw you over the head or do a spinning elbow and he'd be in wars with these guys. Now it's pretty much domination because he's coming into his own natural style."

This is a nice piece from The Daily. One of the most interesting quotes from the video didn't make the story. We've heard a lot about Rashad Evans, a Jones teammate at Jackson's being perturbed with "Bones" for taking the title shot.

Jones tells story (0:40 mark) that Evans was actually the guy who told him to have a big night at UFC 126 and seize the opportunity if it comes. He said Rashad "basically" gave him his blessing. We're guessing this was taped well before some of the verbal drama that has gone down before the last few weeks.

Faber escapes against surprising Wineland at UFC 128

Eddie Wineland was supposed to be a nice showcase opportunity for Urijah Faber in his UFC debut. Instead, the 26-year-old made Faber work all 15 minutes. The former WEC featherweight champion, scored several takedowns in the final two rounds and was faster with his hands on the way to a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three scorecards, at UFC 128 in Newark, N.J.

After the fight, Faber (25-4, 1-0 UFC) sent a message to UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz to get ready. Faber doesn't talk much trash but he's been very critical of Cruz, who he feels is way too cocky. They squared off in 2007 at 145 pounds. Faber scored a submission win with a guillotine choke at WEC 30.

Wineland (18-7, 0-1 UFC) was a lot tougher than most expected. He's big for the weight class and more than matched Faber in the clinch.

Faber's an excellent grappler with nasty takedowns, but he couldn't get Wineland off his feet in the opening round. Wineland used the clinch to avoid the whizzer attempts by Faber.

Faber began opening up on the feet in the second. There was a clear speed advantage. Holding his hands low, Faber was able to pick his spots. Wineland really offered very little back.

Dana White UFC 128 vlogs: GSP says it’s mostly mental for Jones tonight

A trip to the New York area always makes for interesting material on a Dana White vlog. The UFC president and his cameraman Eliot are in the midst of the madness during the 250th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York.

White is also seen taking Chuck Liddell and Georges St. Pierre to the New York Knicks-Memphis Grizzlies game on Thursday night. GSP is asked for a pick, says he's biased because they're training partners and goes with Jones. But he did point out that the fight is mostly mental for the 23-year-old. This early title opportunity for Jones is reminiscent of a 22-year-old GSP getting a crack at Matt Hughes back at UFC 50 in 2004. GSP lost via armbar and has always he said he wasn't ready mentally at that time for such a big fight.

Another teammate, Rashad Evans also makes his pick on the vlog and chooses Jones by second round finish. Evans and Jones have appeared to be at odds through the media the last few weeks.

The UFC uploaded White's third UFC 128 vlog with a view from the stage during yesterday's weigh-in.

During the opening seconds of the video, White meets with New York-area hero Joe Lozito. Lozito helped the NYPD catch a serial stabber last month on the subway by using a technique he said he learned from watching mixed martial arts.
