Ramsey Nijem Makes His Case for Jake Shields, Talks TUF Episode 5

by Michael David SmithOur weekly interview with The Ultimate Fighter cast member Ramsey Nijem includes not only a look at the fight that took place on this week's show -- Clay Harvison defeating Mick Bowman -- but also the fight that everyone in the MMA world is discussing this week, Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields at UFC 129.

Although he knows he's in the minority, Nijem is picking Shields. That's motivated in part by Nijem's status as one of Shields' training partners to help him get ready for the St. Pierre fight, but it's not just talk: Nijem says he put down some money on Shields.

Nijem also comments on this week's Ultimate Fighter episode. The full interview is below.

Lightweight crystal ball: The 2012 rankings

It's the deepest class in the world, so much so that the top of the 155-pound division could be turned on its ear by this time next year. UFC champion Frank Edgar escaped with his title after fighting to a draw against Gray Maynard at UFC 125. Edgar's a great fighter, but people doubt him because of his size and lack of finishing prowess. With challengers coming at him from all directions, will Edgar still be the No. 1 lightweight in the world in Apr. of 2012?

Maynard, Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez and Jim Miller are probably all two wins away from being the undisputed top dog in the division.� With a hot 2011, Sean Sherk, Shinya Aoki, Melvin Guillard, Clay Guida, George Sotiropoulos and Evan Dunham could all force their way into the picture as well. Additional wild cards include Ben Henderson and Eddie Alvarez, if he can escape Bellator. Now that's depth.

Melendez certainly did his part last weekend against Tatsuya Kawajiri. He wasn't going to let judges screw up his first fight in front of Zuffa management. The Strikeforce lightweight champ made sure of that by unleashing a fury of elbows, knees and punches at Kawajiri.

Melendez is knocking at the UFC door for a fight against Edgar, Pettis, Maynard and the rest of the elite crew in the bigger fight promotion.

Melendez says his camp might be the best in the world. Looking at his competition with the "Skrap Pack," it's hard to disagree.

"It's discouraging in camp training with Nick [Diaz], Jake [Shields] and Nate [Diaz]," Melendez told HDNet's Inside MMA. "You question yourself, 'am I ready for this fight?' You know, you have these bad days. I'm getting smashed by these guys sometimes. And then you doubt yourself. And then you walk in there and you dominate, and then you realize that's how great your team is. We're evolving and we always constantly raise the bar against each other."

Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole joined us to debate the future odds on an Edgar-Melendez fight and how he'd matchup against some of the other elite lightweights.

Winter Extension

Mt. Baker's chair 5 accesses some of North America's most densely featured inbounds terrain. In early April, just two weeks before chairs shut down for the warmer months, Nate Kewin and I found ourselves enjoying said terrain. With backcountry avalanches looming we were quite glad to practice some mini-golf sans packs. While most boards are now in garages, swapped out for kayaks and mt. bikes, Nate practices for next years LBS...

 

The snow was of classic Cascade consistency - giving the rider Velcro like brakes to evade traverse lines after a one-person-putter expression session. Here I was thinking of someday learning to get barreled by a moving wave.

Showtime Hits With UFC-Strikeforce Purchase, Misses With In-Cage Action

by Michael David SmithSaturday night's Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley card was the first major event on Showtime since the UFC purchased Strikeforce, and it was a good opportunity to see how Showtime would handle its MMA broadcasts now that the premium cable channel is in business with a promotion that had previously been a rival.

Overall, I thought Showtime did a solid job of handling the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce. But once it was time for the fighters to step into the cage, the coverage of Saturday night's biggest controversy -- the Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine draw -- left something to be desired.

Let's start with the good: Showtime handled the UFC's purchase of Strikeforce appropriately by tackling it at the outset. It's a major story that deserved the upfront treatment it got.

Weekend Results: Rolles Gracie Wins by Arm-Triangle Submission

Heavyweight Rolles Gracie bounced back from last year's one-and-done UFC 109 stint with a submission win Friday at UCC 4 in Morristown, N.J.

Early in the first round, Gracie secured a takedown against Braden Bice, climbed to full mount and applied an arm-triangle choke for the tap out at 65 seconds.

Gracie, the son of Rolls, who is the nephew of the father of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Helio, improved to 4-1 with all his wins coming by submissions.

George Lucas’ daughter returns to the cage this weekend

Amanda Lucas, daughter of the famed filmmaker George Lucas, will fight again this Saturday at Freestyle Cage Fighting in Oklahoma on a card headlined by UFC veteran Matt Grice and well-known female fighter Erin Toughill.

Lucas is 1-1, winning her last fight via decision in 2009. She had been on an extended layoff from the cage while she focused on improving technically and getting married, telling MMA Fighting that she didn't want to walk down the aisle "looking like a battered woman." You would think that her father could probably connect her with a good make-up artist.

Lucas trains at Fairtex in San Francisco as well as Gilbert Melendez's Skrap Pack team and Cesar Gracie Academy.�She also had a knee injury, but has spent the last six months training and rehabbing.

"I am really excited for this fight," she said. "I was originally scheduled to fight in February, but I suffered a partially torn MCL and PCL during my training camp. I have basically been either training or rehabbing my knee for the past six months. I am looking forward to fighting, taking a week off, and then getting back into the gym. I am in great shape, well prepared and am ready to test myself on Saturday."

Lucas has made cameos in her father's movies, including all three "Star Wars" prequels.

Hopefully, her father will get inspiration from her daughter's fight experiences and give MMA the cinematic treatment it deserves. MMA on the Death Star? Indiana Jones and the Octagon of Doom? Or Lucas could return to his roots and make an "American Graffiti" -eseque film about fighting. Instead of chronicling teenage boys and their last night before college -- and a bunch of boss cars -- Lucas could take a look at a day leading up to a fight.

It would be better than many of the cliche-ridden treatments Hollywood has given MMA in the past. Help us Amanda Lucas! You're our only hope!

Flipping, hovering and more: GSP’s training tactics for UFC 129

Georges St-Pierre's biggest fight is on the horizon. Not only is he finally taking on Jake Shields, his most-credentialed opponent in years, but it's the main event of a card that will have 55,000 screaming for Canada's best fighter. It's just a touch more pressure.

That means that GSP has had to pull out all the stops in getting ready for the fight. Hitting a tire? Done. Running with a parachute? So last year. Yoga? Who hasn't done that? No, GSP pushed the bounds on this fight camp.

Flip, flop and fly: GSP turned to gymnastics to cross-train for this fight. As a longtime fan of the gymnastics, I welcome this development in MMA training. Gymnasts have fantastic functional strength, body control, balance and flexibility, all characteristics that are useful in MMA. Plus, it gives us videos like this, so we can all giggle at GSP turning a cartwheel with the skill of a 9-year-old girl.

Hovercraft: It turns out that GSP has skills usually reserved for ghosts. See? He can hover.

More Freddie: GSP returned to boxing guru Freddie Roach to work on his striking for this bout. It helped GSP hammer Josh Koscheck with a jab in GSP's last bout, so why not return to what worked?

Ugly design: We've talked about the ugly shirt already this week, but wow. It deserves mention again. Affliction really brought the ugly for UFC 129.

Ramsey Nijem on Winning His Fight, Painting His Toenails

Ramsey Nijem stepped into the cage and won his fight against Charlie Rader on this week's episode of The Ultimate Fighter, using his solid wrestling base to control Rader, take him down and finish him with a rear-naked choke.

But this week's episode of the UFC's reality show focused almost as much on Nijem's personality outside the cage, where his habits -- including painting his toenails and watching Glee -- make him something very different from the stereotypical cage fighter.

In his weekly interview with MMAFighting.com, Nijem talked about his victory over Rader, shed a little more light on his personality outside the cage, and shared his thoughts on advancing to the next round of this season's Ultimate Fighter tournament.

Diaz defends belt with TKO of Daley at Strikeforce

Winning his 10th bout in a row, Nick Diaz defended his Strikeforce welterweight championship belt, winning a first-round TKO over Paul Daley in an action-packed bout in the main event in San Diego on Saturday.

After initial taunting from Diaz, Daley took the bait. He dropped Diaz with a series of strikes, then followed up with a kick to the body. Diaz survived and stood up, then came back and had Daley pinned against the cage. Diaz threw punch after punch, hurting Daley along the way. Daley tried for a takedown, which wasn't a bright move since Diaz is a jiu-jitsu whiz.

They returned to their feet, and neither fighter stopped throwing strikes for much of the first round. Daley dropped Diaz with a left hook and then jumped into Diaz's guard. Diaz kicked Daley off, and then was stood back up by referee John McCarthy. Diaz finally took over, using strikes to the body and head to knock Daley to the ground, then finished up with ground strikes. McCarthy jumped in and stopped the fight at 4:57, giving Diaz the win.

After the win, Diaz was noncommittal about who he would like to fight next.

"I don't know. We've got to see what's up," Diaz said.

Diaz didn't ask for the unification bout like his teammate Gilbert Melendez did. Diaz's teammate Jake Shields is fighting Georges St. Pierre for the UFC welterweight belt at the end of April. Though Diaz has said that he wants GSP, if Shields were to win, Diaz would be put in the awkward position of having to fight a teammate.

Daley is already in an awkward position, as he was released from his UFC contract�for throwing a punch�in his bout with Josh Koscheck. Now, with the UFC and Strikeforce having the same ownership, Daley's future is less sure. A win over Diaz could have strengthened it, but now he drops to 27-10-2.
