White vlog: Vick, Ice-T, Bradford big UFC fans

UFC president Dana White released the first of his video blogs for UFC 131, and this one is pretty much just White talking to celebrities.

Things to watch for:

-- Lots and lots of F-bombs. If your boss isn't keen on f-bombs being thrown around, don't watch this.

-- About a minute in, St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford telling White that some player is "better than I was at that age." If you can figure out who Bradford is referring to, do tell.

-- Two and a half minutes in, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick making plans to go to UFC 133 at the Well Fargo Center in Philly. Hopefully, the lockout will be over by then and the fights will be a respite for the Eagles who are in training camp. Right? Hopefully?

-- White appeared at E3, announcing that pay-per-views will soon be available gaming systems like the Xbox.

-- At the end, White talks to Michael Bisping and Jason "Mayhem" Miller about their predictions for Carwin vs. dos Santos. Not surprisingly, the two coaches of the "The Ultimate Fighter 14" don't agree.

Woooo! Cope kicks off TUF 13 finale main event with win

Chris Cope beat his "Team Lesnar" teammate Chuck O'Neil to kick off the main card of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 13 finale in Las Vegas Saturday night. Cope took the fight 30-27 on all three judges' cards.

The two felt each other out for much of the first round, with Cope landing leg kicks and short jabs until Cope hit O'Neil with a left hook and the two moved into a clinch. Cope continued to move well. O'Neil became more aggressive in the final seconds of the round, hitting Cope with a barrage of punches as the first round ended.

O'Neil picked up Cope's leg kick habit in the second round, and Cope tried to employ head and body kicks to create offense. O'Neil tried to use flashy spinning back kicks, but had a hard time landing anything because of Cope's movement and O'Neil's telegraphing of every move.

With the crowd imitating his not-at-all-irritating "wooooos," Cope came on strong in the third round. After realizing the flashy kicks weren't as effective, Cope used an attack based in punches. O'Neil had no answer for Cope's striking combinations.

After the fight, Cope was happy with his performance.

"A lot of people growing up doubted me. How you like me in high-definition?" Cope said. "I don't this for the fame. I don't do it for the money."

Carwin video: Sadistic big man beats the snot out of his trainer

The proof is on video. Shane Carwin is thinner, but still packs a wallop. The former UFC interim heavyweight champ closes out his camp with an odd ritual. His trainer Trevor Wittman puts on a massive chest pad and allows Carwin to drill him all over the gym. Wittman wilts on the final liver shot.

Carwin looks great. Now all he needs is for Junior dos Santos to be stationary on Saturday night and give him free shots.

Ellenberger? No way! It’s Fitch that Story wants next

Rick Story surprised many by beating Thiago Alves in just about every aspect of their bout on Saturday. With a collegiate wrestling background, Story used some grappling to wear and slow down Alves, but where he really scored the victory was on the feet. Alves is a feared striker, but was outlanded 79 to 54.

Following the fight, Story (13-3 , 6-1 UFC) was brimming with confidence. When asked about fighting another rising prospect in the division, Jake Ellenberger, Story was quick to say no. Ellenberger has won four straight. Story, 26, and Ellenberger met outside the UFC in 2008 with Story winning.

"I fought Ellenberger before and I beat him pretty handily. It would be a step back for me just because I dominated him," Story told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "He's going to need a couple of wins to (earn a rematch)."

Story, ranked No. 23 at welterweight by the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings, wants No. 2 Jon Fitch.

"I think I'd match up really well. I believe I have really good takedown defense and really good scrambling skills to be able to keep it on the feet. I think I have the power to put it to him, so stylistically I think it's a great matchup for me," Story said. "Jon Fitch has great control, great wrestling, but I've seen him get clipped before. He's up there and it will get me that title shot quicker."

Story probably won't get Fitch, but looks like he can compete with just about anyone ranked ahead of him. The UFC welterweights in the top 22 include Jake Shields, Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Martin Kampmann, Matt Hughes, Anthony Johnson, Mike Pyle, Paulo Thiago, Dong Hyun Kim, Ellenberger, Dan Hardy, John Hathaway and Chris Lytle.

Fitch (23-3, 13-1 UFC) is sidelined after shoulder surgery. He's expected back some time in the fall. His camp did a great video look at Fitch immediately following the surgery. It doesn't look like a very pleasant recovery process.

MMA Marketplace: UFC 131 Walkout shirts for Carwin and ‘Cigano’

With UFC 131 just around the corner, it's time to take a look at the walkout shirts from the headlining heavyweights, Junior "Cigano" dos Santos and Shane Carwin.

Bad Boy's shirt for dos Santos comes in the familiar colors of the Brazilian flag, but have a bit of late-80s, Miami Vice, wearing-linen-suits-with-pastel-t-shirts-and-loafers-with-no-socks-vibe. Hopefully, Junior's cornermen will follow and dress like Crockett and Tubbs for Saturday night. Buy Junior's shirt for the slightly overpriced $39.99.

Carwin took a more cerebral, inspirational approach with his shirt, incorporating symbols that refer to war and engineering (his other job) as well as quote from "The Aeneid" by Roman poet Virgil. He even did a head nod to the fight taking place in Vancouver by using the Canadian spelling of "favours," though he could have bridged the differences by using the original Latin of "Audaces fortuna iuvat." (Ed. note -- I knew that taking Latin in high school would pay off some day!) Buy Carwin's shirt for $31.99.

Credeur interview: TUF 7 vet returns from major brain scare with new perspective

You think you're having a bad day? Imagine Tim Credeur's position as he left a doctor's office in April of 2010 after being told he had an unknown mass in his brain that could be potentially fatal. Then Credeur called his wife and was greeted by the unbelievably great news that the couple was pregnant with their first child. That's a rough spot.

The 33-year-old's health and longevity were in question. It appeared certain that his fighting career was over as well, but he was supposed to snap right into celebratory mode.

"My brain scan came back and they didn't know if it was a brain tumor, if it was the beginning of an aneurysm and it was inoperable," Credeur told us in the RawVegas video. "My wife calls me to tell me she's pregnant with our first baby. That's a tough 10 minutes for anybody to go through. I kind of shelved my problems and I was excited for her, and I didn't tell her anything for a week."

Credeur eventually told his wife and went through nine months of consistent brain scans and check ups to find out that the anomaly in his brain was similar to a birthmark. He's at no risk and it's safe to continue fighting. After 21 months away from active fighting, he's thrilled to be back.

"Feeling like I'm not going to be able to participate in the sport I love and appreciate, and that it was going to get taken away from me for some weird medical scare was kind of tough to swallow," Credeur said. "So having the opportunity to come back and fight and do what I love to do is a huge opportunity."

Credeur's outlook on life, family and friends has changed.

"Having something like that happen to you, you know you re-evaluate a whole bunch of things in life. You realize that some of the most important things in your life are your relationships, who you are and how people view you. That's stuff important," Credeur said. "The integrity of a man defines who he really is. So I'm worried about that."

Credeur is part of "comeback night" in his fight against fellow veteran Ed Herman. Herman, one of the only fighters left in the UFC from Season 3 of TUF, deal with two knee surgeries during his 19 months away.

Former NHL enforcer Brashear wins MMA debut; Cote wins on same card

It wasn't exactly MMA's finest moment, but Donald Brashear seemed to wow some in the crowd. The 18-year veteran of the NHL crushed Mathieu Bergeron in just 21 seconds in Quebec City on Saturday night.

Brashear, who has a three-fight deal with Ringside MMA , came to the arena with a Philadelphia Flyers bag.

A southpaw, the former Canuck, Flyer, Canadien, Thrasher and Capital, crushed Bergeron with a left and then pounded away on the ground as the last second fill-in turtled up.

Believe it not, the Brashear fight was actually the co-main event on the card. Former UFC middleweight title challenger Patrick Cote won via unanimous decision over Todd Brown in the co-feature. This was Cote's second straight win away from the UFC. He beat Kalib Starnes, another UFC alum, back in April. Cote (15-7) was cut by the promotion after a loss at UFC 121 to Tom Lawlor. A serious knee suffered against Anderson Silva at UFC 90 derailed Cote's career for nearly two years.

Persistence pays off for TUF 13 champ Ferguson

Call it cocky. Call it confident. Tony Ferguson said before and after his victory over Ramsey Nijem, that reaching the UFC was his destiny. He backed up his talk and put an exclamation point on what was a long journey.

"I was just so hungry. This was something I was destined to do," Ferguson told Cagewriter after his win at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale." "I wanted to do something different. I found my niche. This is exactly where I belong. I just want the paychecks to say UFC on them."

They will for at least the next year or so. Ferguson's knockout at the 3:54 mark of the first round guaranteed that. The fact that Ferguson was even standing in the Octagon on Saturday was unlikely chapter in his story.

His slot on TUF 13 was far from a given. He'd tried out two previous times and fell short.

Ferguson actually made it to the third round of cuts for Season 11. That's right, a dude who wrestled in college at 165, tried out for a season featuring middleweights. For Season 12, Ferguson flew to Washington D.C., then drove to Charlotte and didn't even make it out of the first round of cuts.

After that failure, he went back to work on the MMA minor league circuit.

"I was living paycheck by paycheck by fighting. I was living in the gym. You hear that story, but I never played that card. The one thing that I did do, I kept my mouth and kept my chin down," said Ferguson.

For Season 13, he took a more aggressive approach during the interview process.

"I went to the third tryout and brought all the aggression with me and everything I've ever had for those three years. My mom told me you kill'em with stats. 'Three time all-state at 152, two-time All American and national champ at 165 for Grand Valley State and I have a Pure Combat championship belt, and this is who I beat.' I was intense and they bought it," said Ferguson.

Once the 5-foot-9 Ferguson arrived in Las Vegas, he realized fighting at welterweight was going to be a rough ride.

"When I first got to the house I was like 'holy crap these guys are pretty big,'" Ferguson said. "The guys would say why don't you go to lightweight?"

Ferguson nearly bowed out of the competition in his first fight. Justin Edwards was giving Ferguson all he could handle before the smaller fighter pulled off an awesome upkick knockout (22:00 mark - video).

Ferguson realized he'd gone away from his roots and was trying to be too pretty in the Octagon.

"I forgot that I was a wrestler. I always wanted to just stand there and go toe-to-toe. There's nothing better than a fight that goes toe-to-toe. You slip and you move, but honestly Justin capitalized on taking me down. I started looking at that. Not so much Pernell Whitaker. That's when I got smarter," said Ferguson.

That was the turning point for Ferguson, who beat Edwards on his 27th birthday. In the next two fights, he destroyed Ryan McGillivray in 46 seconds and dispatched of Chuck O'Neil early in the third round.

After the win over Nijem, he's got a UFC contract in hand and nice bonus of $40,000 for the TUF 13 Knockout of the Night.

"I want to go to Disneyland," said Ferguson.

His fiancee Cristina, who lives near Ferguson in Ventura, Ca., has wanted to go for a while.

"Trust me we're going to go there and Knotts Berry Farm. I want to be able to have fun," said Ferguson.

Ferguson said he'll be back in the gym soon and fight wherever the UFC tells him. His future could be down at 155.

Pettis Brothers have a unique bond: MMA may have two future stars in the family

Anthony Pettis has risen to the top of MMA lightweight ranks. His mix of athleticism, stamina, creativity and well-rounded skill set is tough to beat. The sick part is that he's just 24 years old.

He's got the life experience of someone much older. That comes with training and staying dedicated for 14 professional fights.

It also happens when you have to survive the gruesome murder of your father at 15 years old. Pettis' father, Eugene was knifed down during a robbery gone bad. Anthony had to become a father figure for his then 8-year-old brother Sergio (pictured in the black shirt) along with staying on track to follow his fighting dream.

It's gone off with few hitches publicly and that includes the father figure part. His brother Sergio, now 17, is the spitting image of Anthony.

"I didn't even understand completely what happened," Sergio said referencing his father's death. "But as I grew older with all my friends at wrestling meets, their fathers were there and it was kind of depressing. But my brother Anthony was there, so it was alright."

Sergio's accompanied Anthony to Las Vegas to help him prepare for his lightweight showdown tomorrow night against Clay Guida in the main of the "Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale."

The younger Pettis is mature beyond his years, focused and incredibly poised for a teenager. He's even an amateur MMA fighter with plans set to turn pro when he turns 18. That's right Sergio is already in there fighting men while he's still a high school student.

Anthony raves about Sergio's potential.

"He was my main training partner for Guida," Pettis told "The MMA Insiders" show on ESPN1100 in Las Vegas. "He's already better than me in wrestling."

Anthony says the future is bright for his little bro.

"I guarantee my brother makes a big move in the sport," Pettis said. "Right now, it's my time but he's going to be 18 pretty soon and hopefully we will both be fighting on the same card sometime pretty soon."

Sergio just graduated high school, and shortly after his birthday in August, he'll make his pro debut in September. The kid even speaks about his future career like he's a veteran.

"I've got a big name already with Pettis. That last name means I've got to live up to the hype he's had," Sergio said. "I've got high expectations, but I feel like I can reach them because of my training with him."

Let's allow Sergio to develop his career slowly, but Anthony doesn't have that luxury. All the pressure is on Pettis tomorrow night. He's a minus-170 favorite against a guy with 13 UFC and 39 overall fights under his belt. Guida feels disrespected a bit and wants to derail Pettis from getting his shot at the winner of Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard.

Toby Imada Continues to Shake Up Shoot Boxing; Ai Takahashi Beats Rena for Belt

Filed under:

Two-time Bellator tournament runner-up Toby Imada, continues to make waves in the kickboxing world, this time taking out Shoot Boxing legend Hiroki Shishido at Shoot Boxing 2011 Act 3 on Sunday Night at Korakuen Hall.

Imada's judo background again proved to be an excellent match for Shoot Boxing rules, a modified kickboxing rule set that heavily rewards throws and allows standing submission attempts, as the American threw the former two-division champion around the ring to claim the unanimous decision victory.

In a rematch of the 2010 Girls S-Cup Final, Ai Takahashi evened the score with promotional poster girl and 2010 S-Cup Champ Rena Kubota to claim the vacant Shoot Boxing ladies title.

Toby Imada (3-1-0 Shoot Boxing Rules, 29-16-0 MMA Rules) shocked the kickboxing world in 2010 when he managed to judo-throw his way to a victory over Andy Souwer, the best fighter in the 25-plus year history of Shoot Boxing. Proving that his incredible victory over Souwer was no fluke, Imada defeated another Shoot Boxing legend on Sunday in reigning Oriental and Pacific welterweight champion Hiroki Shishido (50-15-0 20 KO).

The bout was hotly contested early, with Imada coming close with a head-arm triangle attempt and winging power punches, while Shishido delivered spinning back kicks, jabbed well and landed multiple front kicks to the face. The tide turned in round two though when Imada picked up Shishido and carried him across the ring for a spectacular slam and shoot point. With his path to victory now clear, Imada landed two more clean throws in round three and although Shishido did manage a late rally with a brutal side kick to the face, the throws led to the mixed martial artist again claiming the upset unanimous decision win.

Andy Souwer team mate and the third-ranked world super welterweight Henri Opstal (15-3-0), steam-rolled former Japanese middleweight boxing ace Satoru Suzuki (5-7-0 4KO), downing the hapless boxer four times with leg kicks before earning the TKO victory with a hook followed by a low kick early in round two.

2010 Girls S-Cup Champ Rena Kubota (15-4-1 4KO) made major steps towards increasing Shoot Boxing's mainstream popularity in 2010, appearing on prime-time comedy programs to fight comedians and giving unprecedented exposure to Japanese women's kickboxing. Given this, for the first Shoot Boxing women's title match in 13 years, it was obviously hoped by promoters that charismatic 19-year old would back up her 2010 S-Cup victory and further raise the stock of Shoot Boxing. Those hopes were completely spoiled though by a much stronger Ai Takahashi (11-2-0 5KO).

Rena started strong, landing well with punches and push kicks to the face and body but as the bout progressed, Takahashi's huge power advantage became apparent, exhausting Rena with constant jabs and throws to the canvas. With Rena's speed almost completely dissipated, the latter rounds consisted of Takahashi continuing to toss her young opponent around the ring and after five rounds and a standing eight count against Rena, the judges had no issues awarding Takahashi the vacant title.

Second-ranked Japanese super welterweight Kenji Kanai (16-11-0 3KO) came back from a horrible start to absolutely dominate Masatoshi Hyakutake (7-6-1).

Kanai was caught early in round one with a short straight left from his southpaw opponent and took a trip to the canvas. The blow only served to wake up Kanai however as through the second and third rounds, Kanai came back with a vengeance, bullying Hyakutake around the ring and landing completely at will. A shoot point via a hip toss in the second round sealed the unanimous decision comeback win for Kanai.

Second-ranked Japanese super featherweight Akifumi Utakawa (29-12-1 13KO) used his experience to narrowly squeak past fourth-ranked Koya Shimada (9-6-0 2KO).

Shimada was landing well with flurries of fists and high kicks at the end of the third round but his lack of power led to an extension round when the judges were unable to separate the pair. Utagawa had the foresight to keep some gas in the tank and rocked an exhausted Shimada early in the extension round to take the unanimous decision.

Formerly undefeated fourth-ranked Japanese super bantamweight Tatsuya Tsuda (6-1-0 2KO) and fifth ranked Hiroaki Okuwa (6-3-2 1KO)were essentially even after three rounds with Tsuda circling backwards around the perimeter of the ring, landing slightly better with knees and his hands while Okuwa was throwing significantly more strikes and pressing the action for the center of the ring. A questionable throw in the second round though scored a shoot point for Okawa and gave him the decision victory.

Third-ranked Japanese super bantamweight Kazuyuki Fushimi's (12-7-3 3KO) fists brought him a unanimous decision victory over second-ranked Masanori Minato (8-8-0). The taller Fushimi used his reach to keep Minato at bay and a spinning back fist and turning back kick in the last round sealed the win. Minato made a late run in the last round, opening a cut with an illegal elbow following a hook but the damage was too little, too late.

In the opening bout of the main card, fifth-ranked Japanese featherweight Yuji Sugahara (7-3-0 5KO) blasted late replacement Norifumi Yamamura with a knee on the ropes to claim the KO victory.

Herman makes comeback with quick KO at TUF 13 finale

Ed Herman won the battle of two "The Ultimate Fighter" alums on Saturday night, knocking out Tim Credeur in less than a minute on Saturday night.

Herman, in his first fight back in the UFC after a gruesome leg injury, made short work of Credeur. He knocked him down with an uppercut thrown while in the clinch, then finished with a barrage of punches when Credeur was on the ground, finishing the fight just 0:48 into the first round.

This was Herman's first time back in the Octagon since UFC 102 in 2009, when he lost to Aaron Simpson after injuring his knee. Credeur was in a similar position as his MMA career was put on hold when a pre-fight brain scan found an anomaly.

Even with that long lay-off, Herman was happy that he spent less than a minute fighting.

"It's unbelievable," Herman said. "That six, that uppercut, that's been my money punch."

Herman's record is now 22-9, while Credeur drops to 12-4. This was Credeur's second loss in a row in the UFC.

Lessons learned from season 13 of “The Ultimate Fighter”

Thirteen seasons in, any television show is going to feel stale, and "The Ultimate Fighter" has not escaped that fate. The show failed to excite throughout its 10-episode season.

In sitcom-land, this is usually when a long-lost daughter with a cute child who has a sassy catchphrase is introduced. Unfortunately for the UFC, Brock Lesnar had no sassy catchphrase, as his oft-repeated "Are we chicken s*** or chicken salad?" only served to confuse his fighters, and didn't prop up the ratings.

With just the live finale to go, we can now look back at the season and see what needs to be done to improve next season.

Go with exciting coaches over an "important match-up." The Brock Lesnar-Junior dos Santos match-up was to decide who the next heavyweight contender. That alone made that fight significant and exciting. It didn't need the TUF build-up to create interest. Lesnar and dos Santos showed themselves to be nice guys, but nice guys don't make watchable television.

Luckily, the UFC has already remedied that with the selection of Jason "Mayhem" Miller (pictured) and Michael Bisping for the coaches of TUF 14. Both men excel at getting under people's skin and running their mouths, which makes for much better television.

Share more about the fighters' stories. On this TUF cast, we had a devout Muslim, the son of a Baptist pastor, a man who was going through child-custody problems, and another father who kept the picture of his daughter with cornermen while he fought. They came from a diverse set of backgrounds and regions, and yet we only caught a glimpse of what made them interesting.

Let us get to know them, and we'll want to tune in and and cheer for (or against) these fighters. Not only that, it will make fans more interested in the fighters once they do reach the UFC.

Don't do anything to the Coaches Challenge. The episode where the coaches engage in a competition that has nothing to do with MMA is usually a highlight. This season, dos Santos, a Brazilian who knew nothing about American football, defeated Lesnar in a challenge that centered around American football. Leave it as is, unless the payout to coaches and fighters is upped.

Bring back the fight-in bouts. Taking away the requirement that fighters had to fight their way onto the show took away the action-packed first episodes. Fortunately, Dana White has already said that eliminating the fight-in bouts was a mistake, and that they will return for season 14.

What other changes would you like to see for "The Ultimate Fighter?" Will you tune in next season? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.
