Kingsbury survives much smaller Maldonado at TUF 13 Finale

LAS VEGAS - It looked like a heavyweight versus a blown up middleweight, but fighting at the highest level has little do with appearances. The much bigger Kyle Kingsbury discovered what crisp boxing felt like and found himself in a dog fight against Fabio Maldonado. Kingsbury was able to survive some nasty body shots, score a few takedowns and do enough damage from the thai clinch to pull out a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all cards, at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale" at the Palms.

It's the fourth straight win for Kingsbury, who got off to a less than stellar start with the UFC.

Kingsbury (11-4, 4-1 UFC) is one of several TUF alums on the card. Kingsbury lost to both Ryan Bader and Krzysztof Soszy?ski on the show, but the UFC saw enough in him to offer him a spot on the TUF 7 Finale. The former Arizona State defensive lineman has grown a lot as a fighter. He met a tough cookie tonight in Maldonado (18-4, 1-1 UFC).

Early on, it looked like Kingsbury would overpower the Brazilian. The thai clinches appeared nasty as the taller Kingsbury threw some vicious knees. Upon closer look, Maldonado was blocking many of the knees and began hurting Kingsbury with some nasty body shots. He also ate a few big overhand rights. When Kingsbury decided to blow his nose in the third round, the eye blew up.

According to FightMetric, Maldonado outlanded Kingsbury 122-110. That included 65 body shots. Both, this Cagewriter and Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole scored it 29-29 for Maldonado. The Kingsbury takedowns must've gone a long way for the judges. He made good on 5-of-14.

Karyn Bryant interview: Reporter explains why she was comfortable during ‘Rampage’ convo

Add another chapter to ever present debate over females covering male-dominated sports. Much has changed since "The Patriot Missile" days with Zeke Mowatt and Lisa Olsen and yet for some it still hasn't. We can argue and debate Quinton Jackson's behavior during his UFC 130 postfight interview with Karyn Bryant until we're blue in the face, but there's no denying there still remains a sad group of athletes, media members and fans who have deep rooted dislike of females in the sports media.

Bryant joined DC and the Sunshine Man on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to tell us what she thought of the initial Jackson conversation, and the blogosphere's reaction over the last few days.

One interesting side note to the story, the cameraman on the initial interview was actually Karyn's husband, Wade. It'd be interesting to see what most guys would do if their girlfriend or wife were in Bryant's situation on Saturday night.

Nick Diaz Challenges Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137 in October

After a month of speculation that started after UFC 129 in Toronto, it's official: UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his title against Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz.

UFC president Dana White made the news official on Wednesday afternoon through his Twitter account, saying, "U wanted it! U GOT IT!!!" White said the fight will take place on Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas for what will be UFC 137.

St-Pierre defended his title with a unanimous decision victory over Jake Shields at UFC 129 in Toronto at the end of April. After the post-fight press conference, White talked about potential interest in a GSP-Diaz bout with a small group of reporters. And fans and analysts have been calling for it ever since.

Through the last month, White has been insistent that there have been obstacles in the way of Diaz simply coming over to the UFC to fight St-Pierre. And one of those obstacles was Diaz saying he was interested in trying his hand at boxing - even hooking up with a promoter before pulling back and deciding to stick with MMA.

White met with the Strikeforce champion, who after a TKO win over Paul Daley in April seemed to have run out of challenges in the promotion, which is now owned by the UFC. White and the UFC needed to clear the hurdle of Diaz's Strikeforce contract - and there have apparently been enough inroads made for White to make the fight announcement.

The initial announcement leaves several questions lingering, though. White was not immediately available for comment on what Diaz's return to the UFC means for his Strikeforce welterweight belt and how the promotion will fill it, assuming he vacates the title.

But Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie, told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday that under Diaz's new multi-year, multi-fight deal, Diaz will also be able to return to fight for Strikeforce - though Gracie said if that were the case, it would likely mean he would have lost to St-Pierre.

One of the initial barriers, White said, in Diaz coming to the UFC was Strikeforce's deal with the Showtime premium cable channel, which broadcasts the promotion's events. White said on Saturday after UFC 130 in Las Vegas that Diaz's Strikeforce deal wasn't a "Showtime contract," per se. But he has indicated throughout the last month that the Strikeforce-Showtime deal did present a hurdle the UFC would have to cross to make the superfight with St-Pierre a reality.

St-Pierre (22-2, 16-2 UFC) had his streak of 30 straight winning rounds snapped by two of the judges in his win over Shields in Toronto. But he has remained the most dominant champion in the sport the last three years. Since winning the UFC 170-pound title back from Matt Serra at UFC 83, the Montreal native has defended it six straight times against Jon Fitch, BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy and Shields. After winning the belt the first time, against Matt Hughes at UFC 65, St-Pierre lost it to Serra in his first defense in what is regarded as arguably the biggest upset in the sport's history. But since then, GSP has been unstoppable.

Diaz (25-7, 1 NC, 6-4 UFC) returns to the promotion for the first time since UFC 65 in November 2006. Since leaving, he has gone 11-1 with wins in the now-defunct EliteXC, Dream and Strikeforce. He took the promotion's welterweight title from Marius Zaromskis in January 2010 and has defended it three times with wins over KJ Noons, Evangelista Santos and Daley.

Diaz joins his brother, Nate, in the UFC. Nate Diaz was the Season 5 lightweight winner of "The Ultimate Fighter." Last year, Nate moved from lightweight to welterweight. He has lost two straight unanimous decisions, but prior to that slide he won six UFC post-fight bonus awards in eight fights. When he moved to welterweight, he indicated he would like to fight in both weight classes. His brother's return to the UFC might force him back to lightweight.

St-Pierre is currently regarded as one of the top two pound-for-pound fighters in MMA, most often flip-flopping the No. 1 or No. 2 spot with UFC middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva. In MMA Fighting's most recent welterweight rankings, St-Pierre is No. 1 at 170 pounds; Diaz is No. 4 on the list.

Diaz becomes the second high-profile Strikeforce fighter to migrate over to the UFC following Zuffa's purchase of its rival promotion in March. Jason "Mayhem" Miller signed with the UFC not long after, booking a fight against Aaron Simpson for UFC 132 in July. But White last week announced that Miller will coach against Michael Bisping on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," then face him on the TUF 14 live finale.

But while Miller's new deal appears to be UFC exclusive, Diaz's contract could open the door for other fighters to sign new Zuffa deals that would allow them to fight under both banners.

White's announcement of the Oct. 29, event, a certain pay-per-view, as UFC 137 sets up a busy stretch for the promotion, which has already announced a UFC Fan Expo and event in Houston on Oct. 8. And in April, MMA Fighting was first to report that the UFC was set to return to England for an Oct. 15 event. There are also plans in place for an event in Denver on Sept. 24, plus a return to New Orleans for a Spike special show on Sept. 17.

Johnson pulls mild upset on Torres at UFC 130

LAS VEGAS - Demetrious Johnson continues to clash with bigger fighters in the bantamweight class and take them down with his non-stop approach. The 5-foot-3 Johnson made former WEC champ Miguel Torres his latest victim. Torres found himself on his back too often and lost a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards.

Torres (39-4, 1-1 UFC) did a good job of moving and try to pick apart Johnson in the first, but became way too stationary in the final rounds.

Johnson (10-1, 2-0 UFC) scored multiple takedowns in the second and third. Torres worked for submissions, but more often than not MMA judges won't reward fighters for offense from the bottom. And the reality was, Johnson countered every Torres' move and stayed out of real trouble.

"It was a tough fight," Torres said. "He took me down and he just held me. I had a couple of submission attempts that gave me the chance to put him away. This was my fault tonight. He's slippery and he was able to get the takedowns. I just didn't take advantage when I should have."

Johnson said he thought the difference was controlling the pace and pushing forward in spite of what he thought was an injured leg.

"I thought I had a great game plan," Johnson said. "My goal was to kick his front leg, but at one point, he checked my kick and hit a soft spot (on my right leg). It really limited my mobility. My legs are my engine and he took that away from me. Fortunately, I was able to recover and secure good takedowns.

Torres, who raced out to a 37-1 start to his career, has now lost three of five. This was a costly loss for Torres, who was working toward a title shot or slot on a future "Ultimate Fighter" against the winner of the UFC 132's fight between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

The 24-year-old Johnson has a bright future. Frankly, he should be fighting down at 125 pounds, but the UFC hasn't added the flyweight division yet. So for now, look out bantamweights and expect to go hard for at least 15 minutes against "Mighty Mouse."

Tony Ferguson explains offensive TUF outburst

On Wednesday night's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," Tony Ferguson crossed the line when in a drunken argument with castmate Charlie Rader. It started with Rader pouring water on Ferguson's head, and with the amount of alcohol and testosterone flying around, things went too far. Ferguson brought up Rader's custody problems with his son, saying, "Hit me, don't hit your son."

Ferguson discussed the incident in his post on the SB Nation MMA blog:

Why did I bring up Charlie's son? I have no idea, but I have a guess. My birth father wasn't there for me growing up. Somehow Charlie's situation mixed in with my adrenaline from fighting and the booze all worked together to bring up my own issues. I learned a lot about myself watching that on tape and how I felt about certain things in my life. I was under a lot of pressure, I was trying to bottle up frustration and it didn't work. Well, it worked for a while, but ultimately did not.

I said some things I shouldn't have said. I was in a weird place. I was having crazy dreams in that house. The entire experience took me out of my own independence and removed all of my release valves.

I really regret saying what I said to Charlie and we've talked about it since the incident. I've spoke to Clay Harvison and Chuck, too. We are in a better place now than we were that night.

In the post, Ferguson mentions that they started drinking immediately after the fights, and adrenaline was still pumping through his veins.

Every TUF castmate I've spoken to has mentioned how weird the experience is. They're in a house for six weeks with no television, books, visitors or privacy. They get to train, drink, and entertain each other. This is not to excuse Ferguson's behavior, but just to point out that this isn't a normal situation, and abnormal behavior comes out of it.

Couture likes Hamill over ‘Rampage’ at UFC 130

Randy Couture is breaking down UFC fights for Affliction. In this video, he likes the stronger wrestler in the Quinton "Rampage" Jackson-Matt Hamill fight. Couture respects Rampage's punching power, but the ground work of Hamill is enough to make him pick the upset.

Jackson is coming off a narrow win over Lyoto Machida while Hamill is fresh off beating up Tito Ortiz. Everyone's old pal Tom Atencio "goes out on a limb" and chooses Jackson. Rampage is a minus-260 favorite.

UFC 130 betting odds (remaining fights posted later):

Quinton Jackson (-320) vs. Matt Hamill (+260)

Roy Nelson (-115) vs. Frank Mir (-115)

Brian Stann (-140) vs. Jorge Santiago (+110)

Thiago Alves (-220) vs. Rick Story (+180)

Hamill’s grandfather a key to his success

Living in the bubble of the MMA world, it's easy to forget how remarkable Matt Hamill is for being a deaf fighter. He's been in the UFC since 2006, so we're used to him overcoming odds, and usually treat him no differently than any other fighter. It turns out that we're not the only ones, as his grandfather did the same.

Those expectations from his grandfather helped propel Hamill to become an elite fighter, and led him to the main event of Saturday's UFC 130 against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

UFC 130 surprise: Story brawls with Alves and comes out on top

LAS VEGAS - The UFC has a new contender to put in line for Georges St-Pierre. There's nothing fancy about Rick Story, but he's tough as nails and throws everything with nasty intent. Story stood toe-to-toe with one of the most feared muay thai practitioners in the division and posted a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three cards, at UFC 130 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Alves (23-6, 10-5 UFC) is a massive 170-pounder and anyone who can wrestle generally tries to take him down. Story, a former college wrestler, mixed in a few takedowns, but his gameplan revolved around closing space with the bruiser and slugging it out.

"My goal was to be explosive because I think that's his kryptonite," Story said. "I wanted to stay on him and let him know that I wasn't going anywhere."

Story's gameplan was brilliant. His use of the clinch along the cage forced the heavily-muscled Alves to work hard. And by standing in front of him and taking his best shots, it seemed to frustrate Alves.

"I've had a lot of hard strikes landed on me and it goes back to my conditioning. My coach, Pat White, puts me in situations in training where I have to deal with adversity and have to deal with having my conditioning tested. I was prepared for everything Thiago brought tonight and the end result is a victory for me," said Story, plus-170 underdog.

Story (13-3, 6-1 UFC) is riding a six-fight win streak. His only loss came in his UFC debut against John Hathaway. Story is still behind several fighters in the UFC welterweight division, but his skillset would give him a shot against the GSP, the division's champ.

The division has ridiculous depth. The latest USA Today/Bloody Elbow has Story all the way down at No. 23. He certainly looks like he could compete with some of the top 15 fighters like Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck, Martin Kampmann and Matt Hughes.

Alves appeared shocked in the cage when the decision was read.

"To be honest, I don't think he won the fight," Alves said. "I'm fair. If I thought he won the fight, I'd tell you. But tonight, I spent more time on top and landed the better shots. I'm really surprised the decision didn't go my way."

Shinya Aoki Submits Rich Clementi; Imanari, Tokoro Advance in Dream Bantamweight GP

TOKYO, Japan -- DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki was essentially perfect at DREAM Fight for Japan at Saitama Super Arena on Sunday night, dominating UFC veteran Rich Clementi for twelve minutes before slapping on a face lock from back control for an easy submission victory in DREAM's first event of 2011.

Also on the card for the leading Japanese promoter's return to action, Masakazu Imanari and Hideo Tokoro booked their tickets to the final of the Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix, although Tokoro's route to the final was definitely not without controversy, advancing through to the semifinals by an sickening blow to the groin of Yoshiro Maeda.

Full results below.

Shinya Aoki dominates Rich Clementi

As one would expect, Shinya Aoki wanted late replacement Rich Clementi on the mat in their non-title lightweight affair and without too much resistance, that is exactly what Aoki got. Within seconds of the opening bell, the DREAM lightweight ace closed the distance and secured the clinch leading into a single leg takedown into half guard. Clementi's attempts to escape from the bottom position or mount some offense only gave Aoki the space he needed to advance his position and after a failed kimura attempt from the American, Aoki had Clementi in back control.

With Clementi perhaps over-concerned about the possibility of a rear naked choke, Aoki was free to punch without fear of his opponent escaping and the DREAM ace landed what seemed like at least one hundred unanswered blows over the course of approximately four minutes. Clementi made no attempt to escape or offer more defense than simply shelling up, but was clearly telling referee Yuji Shimada not to stop the bout and advising his corner that Aoki "punches like a girl."

In a highly questionable decision, Shimada stood up the bout and yellow carded Clementi despite Aoki continuing to rain in fists from back control while the American made no attempt at all to escape or even move.

Round two was more of the same for Aoki as he again got the takedown with ease and found himself in back control. This time though, realizing that the referee wasn't going to stop the bout regardless of how many punches he landed, Aoki sought the submission more aggressively and was quickly rewarded with his second consecutive face lock submission victory.

Katsunori Kikuno employs new, although questionable style in victory over Daisuke Nakamura
At Katsunori Kikuno's open training session in the lead up to DREAM Fight for Japan, the karate stylist demonstrated a new style of striking that employed no guard and largely consisted of pressing forward with straight punches from the hip while taking unprotected punches to the face. Many in the press had taken Kikuno's demonstration as a simple nod to his traditional roots, but surprisingly this was the style he used in his decision victory over armbar king Daisuke Nakamura.

Kikuno gave no respect to Nakamura's punching power, freely taking punches to the face in order to throw his own. The change of style was also so radical that we did not see Kikuno's trademark hourglass stance or body kick, a blow that has brought him up the top echelon of the Japanese lightweight rankings in recent years. With Nakamura's chin proving solid and the Kiyoshi Tamura student scoring well on the feet, Kikuno resorted to takedowns and ground and pound for the majority of the latter half of the fight and comfortably earned the decision, despite his confusing tactics.

Caol Uno's experience leads him to victory over "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura
15-year veteran, Caol Uno was on the verge of retirement before his bout with artist/slugger "Wicky" Akiyo Nishiura, but a masterful game plan convinced the former Shooto champ and two-time UFC title contender that perhaps is not the time to hang up the gloves.

Uno, lacking the strength to out-wrestle his much younger foe, drew Nishiura into scrambles from feigned takedowns and from there, was time and time again able to secure the back and came close to earning the rear naked choke submission victory. Nishiura, who consistently proves incredibly difficult to submit, was never able to land his wild uppercuts and hooks and so Uno easily earned the judges favor.

"Lion" Takeshi Inoue TKO's Deep Champion Koichiro Matsumoto

In what was billed as a battle of the regional promotions, former Shooto ace "Lion" Takeshi Inoue blitzed fellow striker and Deep champion Koichiro Matusmoto with a straight right, following it up with hammer fists to get his first DREAM victory and the win for Shooto.

Before the right hand, Matsumoto seemed to be taking the lead, moving much better around the ring from the outside and scoring better with his hands, but one punch from "Lion" was all it took to send his opponent crumbling to the canvas. Matsumoto was vocally protesting the stoppage post-fight, but given that he was curled up in the fetal position and making no attempt to move, the stoppage was good.

Joachim Hansen derails Mitsuhiro Ishida
Former DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen has not been overly impressive at featherweight, seemingly lacking power and often running out of gas early in a bout, but his victory over Mitsuhiro Ishida showed that he still can perform at this weight class, even if it is not ideal for him.

In a roll reversal, Ishida, who had been undefeated as a featherweight going into the bout, was surprisingly the better of the two on the feet, running circles around Hansen and dropping him with a straight left hand. Hansen was good enough to recover though and in another strange roll reversal actually landed a suplex on the wrestler among several takedowns he scored.

Despite his cardio failing him in the late in the bout, an armbar attempt from Hansen proved to be better than Ishida's striking and his own takedowns and the judges rendered a split decision in the Norwegian's favor.

Imanari and Tokoro move to finals of Bantamweight Japan Grand Prix

Hideo Tokoro's path to the bantamweight GP finals was controversial as he essentially won one bout by head butt and groin strike.

The highly entertaining grappler was superb in his defeat of Atsushi Yamamoto as he out-boxed and out grappled the Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto team-mate in their rematch, earning a split decision despite taking significant damage in his quarter-final fight.

In that quarterfinal bout, Yoshiro Maeda and Tokoro put on a wild haymaker fiesta, throwing defense out the window and swinging for fences, prompting Maeda to scream in enjoyment and pain. This incredible display was brought to an end though when Tokoro inadvertently delivered a head butt followed later by a sickening groin punch that badly crippled Maeda. Rather than having the bout declared a no-contest and having the judges decide the victor, Maeda continued fighting despite not being able to stand properly and his corner threw in the towel.

Deep bantamweight champion Masakazu Imanari's path to the GP final was more clear cut but was certainly less exciting.

In his quarterfinal bout, Imanari outpointed reigning ZST champ Keisuke Fujiwara in a frustrating match where Fujiwara was intent on defending but offered very inconsistent offense.

In the semifinal match between Imanari and WEC veteran Kenji Osawa though, the Deep champion showed why he is dubbed the "10th Degree in Footlocks" submitting Osawa with a heel hook in the second round to advance to the tournament finals.

Ryan Couture video: Next gen Couture tries to build on family legacy

Ryan Couture is carrying the torch for his family now. The 28-year-old son of legendary Randy Couture is the only family member actively fighting. His father lost some teeth and his final fight at UFC 129. Couture, the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ, called it quits and has moved on to a career in movies.

RawVegas.tv tracked down Ryan to check on how he's doing in preparation for his third pro fight against Matt Ricehouse (4-0) at Strikeforce Challengers 16 in Kent, Wa.

Couture doesn't have a dominant skill like his father did, but because he started training in all aspects of MMA, he may actually be the more well-rounded fighter. There's a good chance he never reaches the heights his father did, but he's already off to an impressive start considering he only began working towards an MMA career in 2007.
