UFC 123 Co-Main Event Breakdown: Hughes vs. Penn III
Filed under: UFC
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- In an attempt to predict the winner of the BJ Penn-Matt Hughes trilogy finale, there's two ways to look at history. You could either examine their previous fights against each other, and how that could affect a third bout since the two are such familiar foes, or you could choose to examine their most recent bouts against their latest opponents. Whichever you felt was more valuable would help you decide which man was more likely to win.Of course, neither outlook is likely to give you a crystal clear picture of how the fight will actually go. If you went on previous history before their first encounter, Hughes' 13-match win streak made him a significant favorite over a fighter who was moving up to welterweight for the first time. Of course, he lost. If you went on previous history before their second bout, surely it would stand to reason that since Penn beat him once, he would beat him again. Of course, he lost.

UFC 122: Yushin Okami Beats Nate Marquardt by Unanimous Decision

In a hard-fought, hard-to-judge main event at UFC 122, Yushin Okami defeated Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision.
"Nate is a great fighter, but I thought I deserved it," Okami said afterward, through his translator. "I'm ready for the championship."
UFC President Dana White has said Okami will get that shot, after champion Anderson Silva takes on Vitor Belfort in February. Okami was the last man to beat Silva, winning by disqualification in 2006 when Silva illegally kicked him in the head on the ground, and both of them have said in the past that they want to settle the score. If Silva beats Belfort they'll finally do it.

Jorge Rivera describes his first fight as a 'beatdown'

Jorge Rivera has 26 fights under his belt. This Saturday at UFC 122, he'll face off with Alessio Sakara, another veteran of the UFC. Between the two men, they have 23 fights in the Octagon. Rivera reminisced about his first fight, a loss to Branden Lee Hinkle who was being cornered by UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman.
"I landed a good right hand that knocked his mouthpiece out and I had him on queer street for a second," he says. "I could hear Coleman screaming at him, 'Take him down!' He shot in with a double-leg and picked me up over his head and I was just thinking, 'Oh God, here we go.' I tried to grab on to the fence to hold on, but he slammed me hard. Then he just beat the piss out of me."
Rivera and Sakara aren't going to be in a title fight any time soon, but they also have a tendency to end their fights with knockouts. Their match-up almost guarantees fireworks in Germany on Saturday.

WEC 52: Urijah Faber Chokes Out Takeya Mizugaki

The biggest star in the history of World Extreme Cagefighting fought for the promotion for the final time at WEC 52, and it went just as planned, as Urijah Faber choked out Takeya Mizugaki with just seconds remaining in the first round.
"This guy's known for going to the very end, so I knew I had to do something drastic to put him out," Faber said afterward. "That's what I did."

Bader gets married, pretty soon it's back to work
Ryan Bader took care of the first order of business now he just has to bang out his honeymoon. Because of the big day, Bader initially balked at taking a February fight against Jon Jones. He had a change of heart and now the fight is set for UFC 126.
It's nice to see many of "Darth Bader's" buds were able to make the wedding. UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez is there along Bader's training partner C.B. Dollaway. And let's not forget FOX NFL insider/MMA trainer Jay Glazer (under the arrow), who was spotted outside.
UFC 126 is shaping up pretty nicely. Fight fans should be thrilled that Bader is sacrificing spending time with his new bride during the holidays to get ready for Jones.
Rumored card at UFC 126 (Courtesy MMAWeekly):
Anderson Silva v. Vitor Belfort
Forrest Griffin v. Rich Franklin
Ryan Bader v. Jon Jones
Jake Ellenberger v. Jon Fitch
Update - Heavy.com reports that the fifth fight on the main card could be former WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres against Antonio Banuelos.

White calls Marquardt a 'choker' and criticizes camp
Dana White speaks his mind even if it means lashing out at the good guys in the sport. White pulled no punches after watching Nate Marquardt struggle in another pivotal fight.
"He is a choker," White told MMAjunkie at the UFC postfight press conference. "He choked tonight. Listen you couldn't meet a nicer guy than Nate Marquardt. He's a great guy. Nice kid choked tonight."
Marquardt lost his one and only shot at the middleweight title back in 2007. He's admitted many times that he froze up against the champion Anderson Silva at UFC 73.
Back in February, a win over Chael Sonnen would've earned him a much-coveted rematch against the champ. Because of a flawed gameplan, he was dominated by Sonnen. It happened again last night against Yushin Okami. Marquardt never got in a groove. He was outpointed on the feet and couldn't maintain position when the match hit the ground.
What disappointed White even more was Marquardt's measured approach. The fight appeared to be even on the scorecards heading to the final round, but the middleweight contender never went for broke.
"You already blew a title shot once; you're in a fight for the title shot again in the third round, and you're not throwing any punches or kicks? It has nothing to do with pressure," White said. "You're ... professional, and you're going to go after it in the last round to get your title shot."
The UFC president pointed the finger of blame at Marquardt's trainer and cornermen.
"I mean, Nate Marquardt sat here tonight and said that he thought he won the fight. Where the [expletive] is his corner? You go into the last round and you're getting outstruck by a wrestler, and you think you won the fight? And this is consistent with the Greg Jackson camp," said White.
The Jackson camp generally employs a calm, analytical style between rounds. There's no screaming, yelling or desperation. White said that approach has backfired with many of the Jackson fighters.
"Marquardt is such a talented guy, and what I'm seeing is stuff from the Greg Jackson camp," White said. "This camp continuously – when these guys fight, their corner is either telling them they're ahead or they're winning."
The disappointment of the loss can probably be erased pretty quickly with a couple of wins. Marquardt is just 31 years old and Silva is far from a lock to hold onto the title in 2011. Marquardt is also fortunate because there aren't a ton of hot shot prospects nipping at his heels that could knock him from the top five in the UFC's 185 class.

Ask DCP and Win with The North Face, YES.NOWBOARD, and frequency TSJ
After reading the DCP profile in frequency TSJ #8.2, you may be left with a few questions for the French-Canadian-transition-specialist turned Squamish-based-backcountry-destroyer.
