With ear bleeding, Griggs scores TKO of Villante at Strikeforce

Chad Griggs won a quick slugfest over Gian Villante at Strikeforce in New Jersey on Saturday, winning his reserve bout in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix. Griggs is now 2-0 in Strikeforce after TKOing Bobby Lashley in August.

Griggs came out swinging from the bell, wobbling Villante more than once. But Villante, who played football at nearby Hofstra University, held on and even landed a vicious kick to Griggs' ear. The ear exploded with blood, but it didn't bother Griggs. He knocked Villante to the ground with a right hook. Villante somehow stood back up but took more punishment. Griggs landed another right, and followed Villante to the ground with more strikes until referee Yves Levigne stopped the bout at 2:49.

With this win, Griggs is now part of a pool to step in for any Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix fighters who may get injured. He is 10-1, while Villante falls to 7-2.

The mobs show up in North America to meet GSP and Fedor

Fight nights are usually the big nights in mixed martial arts, but yesterday on a random Tuesday, the sport took center stage in Toronto and New York. The UFC hit the ground in Canada for a big press conference to introduce the fighters for its April event in Ontario. Strikeforce held a huge fanfest in New York. Fedor Emelianenko was swarmed like a rockstar.

Check out the photos at Roseland in New York City as Fedor, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Sergei Kharitonov, Andrei Arlovski, Josh Barnett, Antonio Silva, Brett Rogers and Frank Shamrock hung out with the crowd.

Fans were fired up:

Dyami Arroyo of The Bronx was the first to show at 8:30 a.m. Despite cold, bitter, windy conditions, he kept his spot at the head of the line. "There was no way I was going to miss a chance to meet Fedor and the greatest heavyweights in the world," Arroyo told Strikeforce P.R.. "As soon as I heard about this, I told my boss I was taking the day off."

Said Brooklyn’s Joe Doyle, who arrived a little after Arroyo and Diaz: "To get this kind of access to these kinds of fighters is unbelievable," he said. "There was no way I wasn’t going to be here. I am really happy that STRIKEFORCE did something like this for us. No other MMA organizations do anything like this around here."

Strikeforce opens its heavyweight Grand Prix this Saturday in New Jersey (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT). Fedor faces Antonio Silva while Arlovski battles Kharitonov.

Some MMA fans don't get it, Herschel Walker is great for the sport

What Herschel Walker is doing is simply incredible. The 48-year-old has two pro MMA fights under his belt and plans on marching forward. On Saturday, He manhandled Scott Carson. While most fans realize Walker is bringing more eyes to the sport, some hardcore fans and MMA bloggers rip him, calling his competition a joke.

Luke Thomas from Bloody Elbow disagrees:

Strikeforce is handling Walker's MMA career exactly as they should be. The idea that only fighters of certain caliber belong in elite organizations is now a rule of thumb, not a sacred edict. If exceptions to the rule make sense - particularly for a number two promotion looking for a unique leg up - then make them.

[...] Walker is taking a path no different than any other MMA fighter with commensurate experience. The pushback on Walker is as much pushback against Walker's participation in the sport as it is a lack of familiarity with low-level professional MMA.

Fight promotions are part competition, part making money and part building the business. That fact seems to be lost on some observers of MMA.

I often wonder how many of those who decry Walker's participation have ever attended a regional MMA event. Those fights lack the superstar power of Walker, but look no different. They're nasty, brutish and often very short. Perhaps this is part of the reason why local or regional MMA promoters often struggle: not even MMA fans are paying attention to their shows.

During a weekend light on big-time sporting events, Walker caught the eye of the non-MMA fan and general sports media.

Several journalists and fans noted on Twitter last night that many if not all of the main card participants in last night's show were trending on Twitter. Who do you think is responsible for that, Jacare? The mic skills of Robbie Lawler? Roger Gracie's massive pre-fight hype? That credit belongs to Herschel Walker and likely Herschel Walker alone. No one else to my knowledge had a write-up in the Associated Press heading into the bout or the sporting talk radio hype or the curiosity of casual sporting fans. [...] Critics often say it's the "real fighters" who deserve the shine. I don't disagree, but much of the attention paid to last night's "real fighters" is a direct result of a fighter participating in only his second MMA bout.

Well said. The sport is still in the growth process. As long as Walker isn't promoted as a title contender, his MMA journey is well worth chronicling on Showtime.

Rutten buries Seagal for taking credit for Silva's amazing kick

Steven Seagal is a funny guy and he doesn't even know it.

The former action film star has got plenty of run recently from his stops in to "work" with fighters from Blackhouse MMA. When Anderson Silva pulled another amazing move from his bag of tricks, Seagal was quick to jump on board and take credit. Silva was fine with it. He helped out Seagal by giving him a few pops during the UFC 126 postfight press conference.

Bas Rutten was watching Silva's win over Vitor Belfort and marveled on Twitter at the boot to the face delivered by the UFC middleweight champ.

When Rutten, a former UFC heavyweight champ, saw the postfight comments and Seagal trying to steal the spotlight, the legendary "real" fighter went off.

Check out some of the fine work put in by Seagal with Silva. Sure Seagal is 58 and slightly overweight, but you can see the athleticism and flexibility he still possesses.

If Silva's cool with Seagal, I guess we have to be too.

UFC 126 prelims: After three big knockouts, Johnson rolls past 'Kid' Yamamoto

Demetrious Johnson wasn't very hospitable in welcoming Japanese star Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto to the Octagon. Kid, one of Japan's biggest stars over the last 10 years, was confused by the speed of Johnson for 15 minutes. The American cruised to a unanimous decision win, 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27, in fight No. 4 of the night at UFC 126 in Las Vegas.

Johnson's decision victory was actually the first of the night. The previous three fights ended via KO or TKO.

"Mighty Mouse" fought at a measured pace, he wasn't about to become another highlight reel victim of Yamamoto.

"He has good striking and he hits hard," Johnson told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "People can say 'oh that's boring,' but we both have good footwork and we both understand our range so well. So if I overextended, I'm gonna get knocked out like everyone else does in the past from that right hook of his."

Johnson (9-1, 1-0 UFC) used his striking to set up excellent takedowns. Yamamoto was a great high school wrestler in Arizona and had hopes of making the Japanese Olympic team, but he couldn't figure out how to stop Johnson's takedowns. The American was successful on 10 takedown attempts. Give credit to Yamamoto, he rose quickly to his feet after six of those takedowns, but the damage on the scorecards had been done. As the fight went along, Yamamoto (18-4-1, 0-1 UFC) took more risks on the feet, missed with most of his punches and found himself on his back.

Happy Fedor-ary! Strikeforce Grand Prix kicks off on Saturday

Though you still may be flying high from seeing Anderson Silva kick Vitor Belfort in the face, we have more amazing fights to look forward to this week. Fedor Emelianenko will be back in the cage on Saturday night, taking on Antonio Silva in the opening round of Strikeforce's heavyweight Grand Prix.

Fedor will be making the rounds in New York City this week to promote the bout, answering questions about who is the best heavyweight, fighting Silva and, of course, who he will vote for in the Sochi 2014 mascot contest. His bout with Silva, as well as Andrei Arlovski's fight with Sergei Kharitonov and three GP reserve bouts, will air Saturday on Showtime, with the preliminary fights airing on HDNet.

Will UFC 129 break attendance records?

The UFC announced that tickets will go on sale on Feb. 12 for their first Toronto event, UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre. Tickets will range from $50-800, and approximately 42,000 tickets will be available for sale. That's nearly double the attendance that the UFC has ever gotten for an event.

The deck is stacked for a big event. Canada's favorite son, Georges St. Pierre will fight Jake Shields on the main event. Jose Aldo will put his belt on the line against Mark Hominick, and Randy Couture, always a draw, will fight Lyoto Machida. Plus, it's the first time the UFC willl be in Toronto.

Canada is traditionally a boon for the UFC. Most recently, UFC 124 in Montreal broke the North American attendance record. With GSP as the main event fighter, they pulled in 23,152 attendees.

Honest Forrest: 'I'm ranked nothing' and 'I'm terrified'

Forrest Griffin isn't anywhere close to the best fighter in the UFC, but he's still one of the most popular with fans in spite of being away from active fighting since late 2009. He's also winless since the middle of 2008.

The former light heavyweight champ faces Rich Franklin, another fan favorite on Saturday at UFC 126. The crowd will be torn. Do they root for the likable Franklin or the everyman Griffin?

Griffin thinks he's understand that connection he has with the fans.

"I kind of say what people are thinking," Griffin told MMAHeat's Karyn Bryant (2:00 mark). "I don't really say, 'I'm gonna try me best.' (I say) 'yeah, I'm terrified. Fighting in front of thousands of people is scary and there's a lot of money at stake. And I'll be honest, I want that money. It's important.'"

Griffin was up front about his nerves entering the Octagon after a 14-month layoff. The massive 205 pounder was sidelined after shoulder surgery and had to restrict his physical activity for months. Describing his return to the cage, Griffin threw out an interesting analogy to the Las Vegas Sun's Case Keefer.

"You’re like that if you haven’t done something in a year," Griffin said. 'Think of the time you went without sex for a year. You were nervous to get back out there."

Griffin said it's been 10 years since he's had a break this long. He said 2010 sucked because most of his problems were beyond his control.
