WEC 52 kick of the night: Koch destroys Rivera

Seconds after his short battle against Francisco Rivera, Erik Koch slapped his shins. If he had the flexibility, a kiss to each leg would've been more appropriate. The lanky featherweight came out looking to land a big head kick and did so in the first two minutes of the fight. He drilled his opponent on the chin and Rivera went down hard. Koch jumped on top to land a few hammer fists but it was over. Referee Steve Mazzagatti saved Rivera at 1:36 of the first round.

Koch missed with a high kick in the opening 10 seconds. Rivera, a late replacement, made the mistake of not heeding that warning. He was stationary in front of Koch, who waited for th right time to unleash the finishing head kick with the left leg.

Koch (11-1, 3-1 WEC) is another top notch prospect to emerge from Duke Roufus' camp in Wisconsin. With some work on his grappling, the 22-year-old could be a real player at featherweight in the UFC.

TUF 13 tryouts: Andre Galvao and a 51-year-old amongst the 298 candidates

With "The Ultimate Fighter 12" winding down, the UFC is already working on the next season. Yesterday in Las Vegas, Dana White joined UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and officials from Spike television to take a look at roughly 300 prospects for TUF 13.

The cast of characters included jiu-jitsu whiz Andre Galvao along with former Strikeforce fighters like Lewis Taylor, Shamar Bailey and Zak Cummings. Those guys certainly have a legitimate shot at making the cast.

There were also some former TUF cast members, Frank Lester and Jeremiah Riggs, who came to Las Vegas looking for a second chance.

A 51-year-old kickboxer took a shot at his dream. To no one's surprise, he fell a little bit short. A trash-talking wacko, who was sporting a shiny championship belt, also got the boot.

Cagewriter spoke with Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, who attended the TUF 13 tryout at Red Rock Resort and Casino, for a behind-the-scenes look.

MMAjunkie has a more thorough list of the recognizable fighters who came to Las Vegas.

The brightest star in the MMA media interviews Torres

See if you can make it the six-plus minutes watching Miguel Torres speak to that blubbery stomach. This is a nice job by Ray Flores, who delivers the questions without breaking into laughter.

Even watching Torres talk about fighters we're not familiar with, you can see and hear why the former WEC bantamweight champ has a chance to be a major star now that he'll be branded and marketed as a UFC fighter.

Nate Marquardt Stands Between GSP-Silva Dream Fight

by Michael David SmithIf you're one of the many UFC fans who's been clamoring for a fight between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and middleweight champion Anderson Silva, you can blame Nate Marquardt's friendship with St. Pierre for the fact that it hasn't happened yet, and likely won't happen any time soon.

In a live chat with MMAFighting.com readers, Marquardt said that he believes GSP -- a longtime teammate and training partner -- is avoiding moving up to middleweight to challenge Silva in large part because GSP wants Marquardt to get another chance at the middleweight title.

Slow Down Expectations for Jose Aldo, Jon Jones

by Michael David SmithUrijah Faber, Jose AldoThe two hottest young fighters in MMA are the 24-year-old WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and the 23-year-old UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones. UFC President Dana White knows that, but he also wants fans to know that Aldo won't be rushed into fighting as a UFC lightweight until he wants to, and Jones won't be rushed into a light heavyweight title fight before he's ready.

And so if you're hoping to see Aldo in the Octagon or Jones fighting for a belt, don't hold your breath.

White said on The Fight Fix on CSN Washington that Aldo had a chance to move into the UFC lightweight division and fight Kenny Florian, but Aldo chose instead to keep defending his featherweight belt. And he said Jones won't fight for the light heavyweight title for at least a year.

There should be more buzz about getting Alvarez to the UFC

Bjorn Rebney's efforts to make an Eddie Alvarez-Gilbert Melendez fight have pretty much dried up. Alvarez shouldn't be too broken up about it. The lightweight phenom's  ultimate goal should be getting into the UFC, but Rebney realizes he has no chance at co-promotion with the MMA giant. Taking promoters out of the mix, the UFC is where Alvarez (21-2) belongs.

Anyone who didn't believe in Alvarez had to be swayed by his destruction of former UFC lightweight Roger Huerta at Bellator 34. Fanhouse just reported that the full extent of the injuries suffered by Huerta were vicious.

According to Huerta's manager Jeff Clark, the game lightweight suffered broken orbital bones in both eyes during the course of the bout.

"He's a little beaten up but how long he stays out really depends on the breaks," Clark said. "The doctors are looking at it."

Many thought that Huerta was forced to quit after the second round because of an injury to his leg. Alvarez's kicks were so nasty that it forced Huerta to switch from a southpaw to conventional stance just 45 seconds into the fight. Now we know it may have been the right hand that did the most of the damage. Huerta was just too slow to avoid Alvarez's straight rights.

Alvarez, 26, just destroyed a guy who went the distance, and was more than  competitive, with two of the UFC's top five lightweights, Gray Maynard and Kenny Florian. UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar would have his hands full with a guy like Alvarez.

One hitch there, Edgar was at the Huerta fight, rooting for his friend Alvarez. He and Alvarez train together at times. Down the road, Dana White may face another buddy issue when it comes to booking the fight. The first thing he needs to do is start sniffing around to see what the timetable may be on getting Alvarez into the big show.

We're all fans of Bellator, but there's little left for Alvarez to prove with Rebney's promotion. It's nice of the MMA media to ask White about non-UFC fighters like Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem, but Alvarez is the guy we should be focusing on.

Roy Nelson stuck between a Shane and hard place

After Shane Carwin pulled out of their UFC 125 bout with a back injury, Roy Nelson Jr. was left in a tough spot. He didn't have an opponent for a bout just over two months away. What's a big man to do? How about calling out a smaller opponent who made a throwaway comment about fighting at heavyweight?

Calling out Quinton "Rampage" Jackson may seem extreme, but Nelson doesn't have many choices on who will fight him. The UFC is nowhere near as deep at heavyweight as they are in other weight classes, meaning that they have a limited pool of fighters to pick a replacement from.

The pool gets smaller when you take a close look at the UFC heavyweight division, and see that most fighters fall into two groups: former title contenders or up-and-comers. Nelson is a winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," but at the same time, he is an incredibly experienced fighter. He is also coming off of a loss to Junior Dos Santos.

Obviously, Jackson is a bit busy getting ready for his UFC 123 bout with Lyoto Machida. Medical suspensions, injuries and timing are also working against Nelson. Frank Mir fought in late September. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is still rehabbing a knee injury. Brendan Schaub, who has three wins since losing to Nelson in the TUF finale, is still on a medical suspension from his UFC 121 win over Gabriel Gonzaga. Who do you think should fight Nelson?

UFC 121: Brendan Schaub Out-Boxes Gabriel Gonzaga to Win Decision

by Michael David SmithBrendan Schaub spent 15 minutes out-boxing Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 121, winning a lopsided unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges' cards, for his biggest victory to date.

Schaub, a former football player and Golden Gloves boxer, totally outclassed Gonzaga for an easy win, and the biggest win of his brief MMA career.

"Gabe's one of the top heavweights in the world," Schaub said afterward. "It's a big step up for me and I'm just happy to get the victory."

Shane Carwin out of UFC 125 bout with injury

UFC heavyweight Shane Carwin announced via his own website today that he has pulled out of his UFC 125 bout with Roy Nelson.

I am going to pull out of the fight with Roy Nelson. As many of you know I have been having some back pain. I had an MRI yesterday and I have some damage that may really require surgery. If the doctors do not have to perform surgery then I will be out 8-12 weeks. If they do have to perform surgery I do not know how long I will be out of action.

Carwin said that he will be able continue training cardio while healing from surgery, which was clearly his Achilles heel in his UFC 116 loss to Brock Lesnar. If Cain Velasquez's win over Lesnar this past weekend said anything about the UFC's heavyweight division, it was that all fighters need a more complete game to be the champ, and that includes cardio. If Carwin wants to return to the title fight, it's smart for him to both get healthy and not ignore his endurance.

Losing this fight is a blow to UFC 125, a New Year's Day card in Las Vegas. The event is headlined by the lightweight championship bout between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Carwin is disappointed about having to pull off the card, tweeting, "Roy and my boss are the only ones happy about this."
