WEC 52 bonus video: Future star McDonald looks dynamite

Here's rooting for the day that all the fights on U.S. mixed martial arts cards will be televised someday like they do in Japan. Without a five or six hour window on Versus, the WEC was unable to show us the guy that may have been the most impressive of the night at WEC 52.

Michael McDonald, a 19-year-old, who came with a ton of hype. lived up to the expectations. WEC released a video free view of McDonald's win over Clint Godfrey.

Here's another one of these new breed guys, who's been training in all aspects of MMA from before he was a teenager. Most of todays big stars in MMA all came from a particular discipline. That'll change in the 10 years. Most of the elite fighters will have started at a young age and be well-versed in all facets of MMA.

McDonald (12-1, 1-0 WEC) showed off an impressive skill set in his quick win Godfrey. The first thing you notice is his calm demeanor in the cage. No nerves at all for a guy his age. Then McDonald let the hands go. He drilled Godfrey with the first good combination he threw and then floored the South Dakota native with a straight right (3:05 mark). McDonald jumped on top, unleashed some ground and pound and then calmly walked away.

Even when he made a mistake and allowed Godfrey to score a takedown, the teenager showed poise off his back. Watch as he waits for Godfrey to leave his left arm exposed (5:00 mark). The second he did, McDonald slapped on an armbar and got the tap almost immediately.

That was awesome. McDonald looked like the much bigger fighter and a kid who could be fighting at featherweight in his mid-20's. Keep an eye on McDonald in the UFC.

UFC-WEC Merger Brings Excitement, Warning About Jobs on the Line

In theory, a bantamweight fighter shouldn't be able to end a heavyweight's career, but that's the exact scenario that is likely to play out at some point over the coming months as the UFC and WEC officially merge and fighters jockey for precious roster slots.

With the Jan. 1 addition of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions in the UFC - bringing the total of weight classes to seven - the number of fighters looking for jobs will rise, but the total number of slots available to fighters is expected to hold steady.

That means fighters who might have gotten one more chance in the past after a questionable performance might no longer be so lucky. Instead, they might find themselves on the outside of the octagon looking in.

Herschel Walker off Strikeforce's St. Louis card

Strikeforce announced Wednesday that Herschel Walker had to pull out of his bout with Scott Carson at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu. He sustained a cut under his eye that needed several stitches, and won't be able to heal in time for next weekend's bout. From the press release:

“I feel terrible about this,’’ said Walker, who was cut from a knee strike while training with AKA teammate and two-time United States Olympic wrestling team member Daniel Cormier. “I know things like this happen in all sports, but I had trained very hard and was excited to be returning to the cage again. I hope to fight again as soon as the cut heals.’’

The card remains strong, headlined with Dan Henderson taking on Renato "Babalu" Sobral, and also including Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith, Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland, and Antonio Silva vs. Valentijn Overeem.

-- If you're headed to the Strikeforce event in St. Louis, stop at a toy store on your way in. Strikeforce is partnering with Toys for Tots to collect holiday presents for underprivileged children. Bring a new, unwrapped toy with you to the fights, and volunteers will be there to collect your gift.

A hot ticket in Detroit, fans are focused on 'Rampage'

Detroit is going through some rough times. The struggling economy has killed the city. Housing values are at an all-time low and unemployment has skyrocketed. It might be why the Detroit-area fans are fired up to see Quinton Jackson. He escaped the rough streets of Memphis to become one of mixed martial arts' biggest stars.

Jackson faces Lyoto Machida tonight in the Octagon in the main event  at UFC 123. The 32-year-old told the Detroit Free Press that fighting has saved him from a life behind bars.

"Wrestling and the UFC have changed my life. The toughest people in the world -- the street punks who think they're tough, anyway -- are dead or in prison," Jackson said. "If you are in prison, that's the same as being dead, I think. This sport saved me. I could have been dead. I've been shot at a few times."

At 32 years old, Jackson (30-8, 5-2 UFC) is still a young guy but the fight marks a crossroad for his career. Plenty of critics are questioning Jackson's ability to get back to the well-rounded ways of his PRIDE days. The powerful brawler has fallen in love with his hands. If you only approach him from one angle, Machida (16-1, 8-1 UFC) is a tough assignment. He needs to mix things up, but in the end, it will be Rampage's power punching that can win him the fight. It's what has fans scurrying for tickets.

According to SeatGeek, even with the money struggles in the Motor City, fans are hot and heavy over UFC 123.

'Money' Mendes takes decision win at WEC 52

Chad Mendes (9-0) continued his undefeated record with a unanimous decision win over Javier Vazquez (15-5) at WEC 52 in Las Vegas on Thursday night. All three judges saw it 30-27 for Mendes.

As expected, Mendes used his wrestling skills to dominate the first round. Though Vazquez used the rubber guard to keep Mendes from passing card, Mendes punished him throughout the round with punches and elbows.

Mendes started out the second round with a flying knee and punches. Sensing he was in trouble, Vazquez jumped guard and again used the rubber guard to control from the bottom. Mendes tried to slam Vazquez out of the rubber guard several times, but Vazquez stayed calm and stayed active on the ground. After Vazquez reversed and returned to his feet, Mendes tried to somersault the fight to the ground. Vazquez defended well, but then Mendes did another roll and ended up on top.

In the third round, Mendes showed that his conditioning is among the best in his division. "Money" didn't slow for a second. He took down Vazquez early and beat on him for the rest of the round. In the final minutes, he opened a gushing cut below Vazquez's eye.

Mendes was a division I All-American wrestler at Cal Poly, and joined Urijah Faber's camp not long after graduation. In his ninth fight, he showed how his skills have evolved.

Rampage Jackson Worries Lyoto Machida Will Give Him a Boring Fight

by Michael David SmithRampage JacksonWhen a UFC fighter goes on SportsCenter two days before his fight, he's usually expected to try to sell the viewers on a fight that he guarantees is going to be a "brawl" or a "barn burner" or a "slugfest" or whatever other word you want to use to describe the kinds of fights that will make the casual MMA fan watching ESPN buy the pay-per-view.

That's not what Rampage Jackson did on Thursday morning.

Instead, Jackson went on SportsCenter and described his fight with Lyoto Machida Saturday night at UFC 123 as one that could easily be boring.
