‘The War Master’ Barnett and Overeem admit their fights weren’t exciting

Tournaments are tremendous, but the one downside may be the fighters trying manage fights a little too much. Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett admitted to fighting smart fights, but not very exciting.

Overeem didn't want to take any risks on the ground against Fabricio Werdum. In the video below, he apologizes for the pace of the fight. Barnett admitted there was a methodology behind his mount without many strikes against Brett Rogers.

"We emphasis a lot with hip pressure and taking the wind out of people. My mount, the drive from my hips was really killing his wind," Barnett told Showtime. "While not super exciting to watch, ultimately [it was] very beneficial to me. It was a matter of setting things up."

Barnett faces a more experienced mixed martial artist in the semifinals. Sergei Kharitonov is 18-4 and has been in there with guys like Semmy Schilt, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Pedro Rizzo. He's also 1-1 against Overeem.

"Better all around fighter, sharp boxing and good kickboxing. [He's] very tough, granite chin and better ground game, but I know I have the tools to beat him as well. It's just going to be a different look," said Barnett.

The 33-year-old Barnett also revealed that he's no longer "The "Baby-Faced Assassin." He's now "The War Master."

UFC 131 openers: Beltran wins brawl over Rosa, Elkins takes shaky decision from Omigawa

Joey Beltran and Aaron Rosa won't be modeling for a calendar anytime soon, but those big dudes can dish out some damage. They can also take a beating. The heavyweights, who clocked in at a combined 598 pounds, slugged it out until Rosa got drilled by a knee early in the third. Beltran turned up the heat and pounded out Rosa on the ground for a win at the 1:26 mark of the third at UFC 131 in Vancouver.

Beltran, a 237 pounder fighting out of San Diego, wins for the third time in the UFC. His killer instinct was impressive.

"To be blunt, I knew he was going to be tough as hell. I was able to land some big shots and I am really happy with this performance," Beltran said. "Putting away a tough guy like him is just a testament to how hard of a camp I went through to get ready for tonight."

Just 40 seconds into the third, Beltran (13-5, 3-2 UFC) worked head control and pushed Rosa down into a nasty knee. That seemed to change everything as Beltran scored an easy takedown.

With Rosa (16-4, 0-1 UFC) on his knees and covering up, Beltran landed some body punches and got off 11 shots to the head. Rosa rose to his feet, but was stunned. Beltran dumped him a few seconds later, and as he settled into half guard he came down with the full force of a right elbow to Rosa's face. Rosa was shot. The bigger man ate a flurry of punches. Two left hands through his arms ended things.

"I got tired, but I think I got hit in the back of the head after he took me down and that dazed me. When I got up, he hit me with more hard shots and I never recovered. He's tough and proved that tonight," said Rosa.

Beltran came to Alliance Training Center in San Diego weighing 300-plus pounds. He's slimmed down and looks better each time out.

"I think I'm barely starting to show the type of fighter I am. To succeed in the UFC, it takes a full team effort and my team did a great job preparing me for this fight," said Beltran.

After seeing both fighters sporting some extra beef around the middle, it looked like stamina might be an issue, but it wasn't. Rosa, who's fought in the past at light heavyweight, entered the fight at 261 pounds. He absorbed some huge right hands, body shots and a few good standing elbows through the first round and a half. Rosa came back towards the end of the second, but that big knee from Beltran in the third took away his chances to get a win in his UFC debut.

During the prefight, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva added the note that this was the first time two fighters of Mexican descent went head-to-head in the Octagon.

Japanese star Omigawa loses again in the UFC

This was another big night for Japanese MMA. Michihiro Omigawa, one of the top featherweights from Japan, needed a win after getting dominated by Chad Mendes at UFC 126. It looked like he did enough to take a 29-28 decision from Darren Elkins, but the judges disagreed. Even with multiple cuts on his face and a lackluster third round, Elkins took a unanimous decision from Omigawa, 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27.

Elkins (12-2, 2-1 UFC) did some nice work in the opening round. Omigawa bounced around the cage and switched stances every few seconds, but it didn't allow him to land anything very solid.

In the second round, Omigawa landed some good shots around Elkins' right eye and opened two cuts. He also scored a takedown and blasted away at Elkins. In what appeared to be a one-sided final round for Omigawa, more cuts were opened on Elkins' face and he finished all bloodied up. It didn't impress the judges.

A former lightweight, Omigawa (12-10-1, 0-4 UFC) dropped to featherweight and went 8-2-1 before re-signing with the UFC. He's now dropped two straight.

1976 Olympian Davis not impressed by dos Santos’ boxing

The early line is out for the proposed Cain Velasquez-Junior dos Santos heavyweight title fight. Velasquez is a solid favorite at minus-150 which surprises because we keep hearing that JDS has the best boxing in the heavyweight divisiion.

Howard Davis Jr., a 1976 Olympic Gold medalist, isn't one of those viewers impressed with the Brazilian's boxing.

"If you compare it to boxing it wasn't that good. It was okay for MMA," Davis told Alex Donno from 790 the Ticket in Miami. "If he was a pure boxer, he would've knocked him out a long time ago. He just seemed cautious and scared. He didnt throw enough jabs. He should've put him away."

Davis doesn't believe JDS showed enough killer instinct.

"If Chuck Liddell [in his prime] was a heavyweight fighting one of these guys, especially Shane carwin, he would've knocked him out," said Davis. "Chuck was a fast starter. He didn't play. He tried to put you away. These guys are just too tentative too me."

Davis also pointed out that Liddell was wise in allowing injured fighters to get back to their feet, where he would try to inflict more damage.

Before fighting Cruz, Faber takes on internet tough guys

In the age of online gaming with strangers, anonymous internet commenting, and fake Twitter accounts, it can be easy for someone to hide behind a keyboard when ripping on others. With the help of Jareb Dauplaise from "The Hard Times of R.J. Berger," Urijah Faber has an answer for that. (Warning, lots of foul language in the video.)

Dauplaise didn't do much to prepare Faber for his UFC 132 bout, but he did serve up a nice reminder to the internet tough guys and gals of the world. You never know who is on the other side of that keyboard.

Marius Zaromskis vs. 'Mach' Sakurai Rematch Booked for July 16 Dream Event

Another champion has been added to DREAM's upcoming event as DREAM welterweight champion and 2009 Welterweight GP champion Marius Zaromskis will rematch former pound-for-pound great Hayato "Mach" Sakurai in a non-title bout at Fight for Japan: DREAM 2011 Bantamweight Japan Tournament Final.

Prior to their first meeting during the 2009 Welterweight GP, Sakurai had struggled badly to cut the required weight and questions were raised as to his readiness and commitment to fighting. During the bout however, Sakurai traded evenly with Zaromskis early but was eventually on the receiving end of the Lithuanian's signature head kick and was pounded out for the first round stoppage.

Since then, although the reigning champion Zaromskis has managed to pick up two more wins in Japan and keep his belt but his trips to America have been disastrous, going 0-3 with one no contest. Sakurai has been even more troubled since their first meeting as the knockout loss was the start of an 0-4 slide that has yet to be broken.

The full card after the break.

Bisping interview: The Brit is glad to be back, but far from thrilled with Miller choice

It's been a while since we've seen Michael Bisping. For many, the last memory is him spitting at a cornerman following his destruction of Jorge Rivera at UFC 127.

Bisping has returned to the UFC and was given a plum spot on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter." As taping for TUF 14 began last week in Las Vegas, Spike allowed media members to speak with Bisping (video-NSFW).

The Brit traveled a rocky road after UFC 127. Many around the sport wanted the Brit to suffer a steep penalty for his actions. When pressed about his critics, Bisping was predictably outspoken.

"Those guys need to get a [expletive] grip on themselves, I apologized to Jorge Rivera and his camp for spitting on the floor because that's not the way I should've been acting," Bisping said. "I'm yet to hear an apology from him for insinuating that my girlfriend has chlamydia and all the other [expletive] he talked about. I was man enough to do that, he wasn't. Next question!"

Bisping defended his actions towards Rivera cornerman Matt Phinney.

"It wasn't a spitting incident. I spat on the floor because the guy was talking about my family and if i talked [expletive] about your family, I'd expect you to spit on the floor and show contempt for me as well," Bisping said. "The guy's an absolute piece of [expletive] and that's what I think and that's what I showed him."

Bisping is ready to move on against another antagonist in Jason Miller. Miller is a pretty accomplished middleweight and recently crossed over as a television star with his show "Bully Beatdown" on MTV. That said, a lot of MMA fans aren't familiar with Miller because he was fighting outside the UFC and that concerns Bisping.

"I can understand it, he got a bit of a crossover but I wasn't overly thrilled that he's going to be my next fight," Bisping, who was hoping for Chael Sonnen or another well known 185-pound contender in the UFC.

Bisping also knows Miller is a rough fight.

"I'm not underestimating him. I'm not saying he's a lesser fighter than me, but in term of world rankings and getting a title shot, I don't think he's going to progress me in my career," Bisping said. "He's a very tough fight and in some ways a bad matchup because I'm going to be expected to beat him. He's obviously looking to make a name on my back."

Miller and Bisping will meet on Spike at the TUF 14 Finale in December. Miller has won seven of his last 10 fights. The only blips on his resume are a disqualification against Ronaldo Souza and a decision losses to Souza and Jake Shields. That's two of the top submission artists in all of mixed martial arts.

UFC 131 postfight: Florian likely to get Aldo next, JDS worked the ref and Herman prefers fighting fat guys

It was a jubilant atmosphere at the UFC 131 postfight press conference in Vancouver. Sure the winners were all beaming, but it was probably because of the positive aura that always surrounds Junior dos Santos. The nastiest striker in the world in the heavyweight division immediately flipped the switch once the fight was finished and was chipper in front of the media.

- Dana White was amongst the participants with a big grin. Sharing the stage this weekend with the Stanley Cup Finals, UFC 131 was a success in Vancouver. The event drew 14,685 and a gate of $2.85 million.

- Some of that money was handed out in the form of $70,000 postfight bonuses.Dave Herman and Jon Olav Einemo got the Fight of the Night bonus. Chris Weidman received Submission of the Night for his standing guillotine stoppage ofJesse Bongfeldtand Sam Stout cashed the Knockout of the Nightbonus.

- Stout, previously a five-time bonus winner, was relieved to finally score a clean KO. He joked thatthe pressure was on because of his "Hands of Stone" nickname. He hadn't scored a KO finishsince late 2007.

- White called the knockout one of the most vicious in the history of the UFC.

- Dos Santos admitted that he tried to play referee Herb Dean at the end of the first round. After blasting away at Carwin with dozens of shots, he turned to the ref and asked him to stop the fight. JDS admitted that he was simply tired and needed a break.

- There was some clarification on why the fight was delayed in the final round. White said that Dean brought doctors into the cage with a minute left because Carwin had a flap of skin hanging over his eye.

- White wouldn't officially commit to who gets the next shot at UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo Jr., but he said Kenny Florian is the most likely choice. That means he moves in front of Chad Mendes, who decided to take another fight at UFC 133 instead of waiting for Aldo to return from injury.

- The line of the night came from the UFC newcomer Herman. The shredded 6-foot-4, 231-pounder, who smiled throughout a fight where he ate some huge shots from Einemo. Answering what could've been the dumbest question of the week, Herman said he wouldn't be going down to 205. His reason? Herman said he doesn't like to cut weight, plus h'd be facing guys just as strong and faster and said, "I'll stick tofighting fat guys."

- Michihiro Omigawa will be back for at least one more fight in the UFC. He lost a disputed decision to drop to 0-4 with the promotion, but White thought the judges blew it according to MMAjunkie:

"He won," White said. "Overruled."

Omigawa also got his win bonus.

Koscheck dislikes new shirt, Bonnar wants to pummel him

It's a great marketing idea that apparently irks some other UFC fighters. Stephan Bonnar's new "Trash Talking Kids" t-shirt line is based on real-life fighters like Josh Koscheck, Forrest Griffin and Cain Velasquez.

Koscheck's "Josh Koshbygosh" shirt is pretty cool, right? Not according to Bonnar, who claims Koscheck had his lawyers call about the t-shirt.

"He got wind of it and he didn't like it and I tried to explain it to him firsthand. 'Like, look we're doing them for all the fighters. It's kinda a joke, just cartoon versions of the fighters.' His version is called Josh Koshbygosh and he kinda looks like a Cabbage Patch doll, because he really does. Anyway, so he didn't like it," Bonnar told Five Knuckles. "Turns out we won't be able to sell his but we will be able to sell the other ones. I didn't think his was gonna sell too much anyway. We're getting hit up his lawyers at the moment, it's been a pain in the ass."

Bonnar also made some interesting comments about Koscheck and the now infamous sucker punch from Paul Daley.

"He actually inspired the idea, he talks so much [expletive] in the Daley fight and after the fight. The whole time I see Koscheck talking [expletive] to him on the ground, I thought it was hilarious and I was carrying on about it. Then sure I knew he was gonna get to Daley. Turns out afterward that he was saying terrible things about Daley's mom and all that. Well it's kinda understandable that Daley tried to punch him afterwards and sure enough he got to Daley. Daley lost his cool and punched him afterwards," Bonnar said. "I thought it was the funniest thing, like he is just a trash talking kid at heart."

UPDATE: Koscheck explained his side of the story to Bleacher Report

"This situation is very black and white," (Koscheck who is 14-4 in the UFC said). "There's a side of right and a side of wrong and I'm on the side of right. Stephan Bonnar and his company are on the side of wrong. I have an exclusive deal that is a conflict to use my image, to use my likeness, and to use my name."

"He spoke with myself and my manager Bob Cook at AKA when he was filming something for SpikeTV, he was in agreement and in an understanding that they would stop producing and making the shirt. Because I was about to get sued from my preexisting exclusive deal that I've had signed for two-years."

"He basically gave me no other choice, but to go after him legally because of the fact that I'm about to be sued from another company because of Stephan Bonnar and his antics."

That's not the way you want to start a high level MMA broadcast. Valentijn Overeem, with a spotty 29-25 record coming in, bailed mentally from his fight against Chad Griggs. Overeem submitted due to strikes at 3:28 of the first round of the first Showtime fight on the Strikeforce card in Dallas.

The American prospect scored a takedown and fell into half guard. Overeem did a nice job of controlling Grigg's left arm. Once "The Grave Digger" freed his arm, he unloaded on Overeem. The older brother of Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem, turned to his side where Griggs pounded away. Seconds later, Overeem tapped to alert referee Kerry Hatley that he'd had enough.

Griggs landed 28 of 40 shots and picked up win No. 3 of his Strikeforce career.

Griggs (11-1) first exploded onto the scene with a 2010 victory over Bobby Lashley. Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo foreshadowed the happenings when he said Overeem's less than stellar record was due to the fact that he hasn't always handled rough situations well.

UFC 131′s Three Stars: Stout, Herman and Munoz

Anyone who was disappointed with the UFC 131 lineup going into the fights was quickly quieted by the excellent performances in Vancouver on Saturday night. Top to bottom, UFC 131 featured exciting bouts that had huge implications in each fighters' division. Who stood out?

No. 1 star -- Sam Stout: In what UFC president Dana White called "one of the most violent knockouts he has ever seen," Stout knocked out Yves Edwards with a bang. His overhand left had Edwards out before he even hit the canvas. He won a $70,000 bonus for that knockout.

No. 2 star -- Dave Herman: After a career of jumping around promotions, Herman had the chance to impress after Brock Lesnar's surgery caused a reshuffling of the heavyweights at UFC 131. He took advantage of his slot on the main card, showing off an iron chin and devastating knees that eventually led to the win over Golden Glory-trained John-Olav Einemo.

No. 3 star -- Mark Munoz: Early in his bout with Demian Maia, Munoz looked surprised by the improved stand-up that Maia showed. By the second round, he had regained his composure and did a masterful job of mixing strikes and wrestling while holding off Maia's vaunted submission attempts. Now, Munoz is on the lookout for a title shot, and he impressed the boss. After the fights, Dana White said:

"Beating Demian Maia is a big deal. It was a good, tough fight tonight, and it was funny because Demian Maia looked awesome. The fact that he bought Demian Maia, and the fact that he beat Demian the way that Demian fought tonight was unbelievable."

Who were your Three Stars from UFC 131? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Persistence pays off for TUF 13 champ Ferguson

Call it cocky. Call it confident. Tony Ferguson said before and after his victory over Ramsey Nijem, that reaching the UFC was his destiny. He backed up his talk and put an exclamation point on what was a long journey.

"I was just so hungry. This was something I was destined to do," Ferguson told Cagewriter after his win at "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale." "I wanted to do something different. I found my niche. This is exactly where I belong. I just want the paychecks to say UFC on them."

They will for at least the next year or so. Ferguson's knockout at the 3:54 mark of the first round guaranteed that. The fact that Ferguson was even standing in the Octagon on Saturday was unlikely chapter in his story.

His slot on TUF 13 was far from a given. He'd tried out two previous times and fell short.

Ferguson actually made it to the third round of cuts for Season 11. That's right, a dude who wrestled in college at 165, tried out for a season featuring middleweights. For Season 12, Ferguson flew to Washington D.C., then drove to Charlotte and didn't even make it out of the first round of cuts.

After that failure, he went back to work on the MMA minor league circuit.

"I was living paycheck by paycheck by fighting. I was living in the gym. You hear that story, but I never played that card. The one thing that I did do, I kept my mouth and kept my chin down," said Ferguson.

For Season 13, he took a more aggressive approach during the interview process.

"I went to the third tryout and brought all the aggression with me and everything I've ever had for those three years. My mom told me you kill'em with stats. 'Three time all-state at 152, two-time All American and national champ at 165 for Grand Valley State and I have a Pure Combat championship belt, and this is who I beat.' I was intense and they bought it," said Ferguson.

Once the 5-foot-9 Ferguson arrived in Las Vegas, he realized fighting at welterweight was going to be a rough ride.

"When I first got to the house I was like 'holy crap these guys are pretty big,'" Ferguson said. "The guys would say why don't you go to lightweight?"

Ferguson nearly bowed out of the competition in his first fight. Justin Edwards was giving Ferguson all he could handle before the smaller fighter pulled off an awesome upkick knockout (22:00 mark - video).

Ferguson realized he'd gone away from his roots and was trying to be too pretty in the Octagon.

"I forgot that I was a wrestler. I always wanted to just stand there and go toe-to-toe. There's nothing better than a fight that goes toe-to-toe. You slip and you move, but honestly Justin capitalized on taking me down. I started looking at that. Not so much Pernell Whitaker. That's when I got smarter," said Ferguson.

That was the turning point for Ferguson, who beat Edwards on his 27th birthday. In the next two fights, he destroyed Ryan McGillivray in 46 seconds and dispatched of Chuck O'Neil early in the third round.

After the win over Nijem, he's got a UFC contract in hand and nice bonus of $40,000 for the TUF 13 Knockout of the Night.

"I want to go to Disneyland," said Ferguson.

His fiancee Cristina, who lives near Ferguson in Ventura, Ca., has wanted to go for a while.

"Trust me we're going to go there and Knotts Berry Farm. I want to be able to have fun," said Ferguson.

Ferguson said he'll be back in the gym soon and fight wherever the UFC tells him. His future could be down at 155.

Guida’s mother wins loudest fan of the night

"The Ultimate Fighter" finale took place at the Pearl at the Palms, a small, intimate venue for fights. That intimacy also means that every yell from the fans can make it onto the broadcast. Chris Cope inspired an onslaught of "woooooos," but no fan had a more raucous cheering section than Clay Guida.

That was led by the matriarch, Debbie Guida, or as she's better known, Mama Guida. Her yells could be heard through the television screen as he won a decision over Anthony Pettis. Guida's wrestling left little doubt in who won the fight, while his family's cheering section left little doubt who was the most popular fighter at the Palms.

Ring, Poirier early winners at UFC 131

Dustin Poirier and Nick Ring were big winners in the preliminary fights at UFC 131 in Vancouver on Saturday.

Ring puts on clinic

After getting knocked out of the 11th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" with an injury, Nick Ring has impressed in the Octagon. He followed up his UFC 127 win over Riki Fukuda with a submission win over James Head at UFC 131.

Ring had to come back from early problems to win. Head caught Ring with a right that clearly shook up the Canadian fighter. Ring fell to the ground, but was able to grapple his way out of trouble. They returned to their feet, but Head did not let up. He threw a mix of punches, kicks and knees, but wasn't able to put Ring in danger. Ring finished the round in good shape, taking Head down with a minute left.

Ring started the second round with a takedown and then moved into side control, and tried for a triangle choke. He couldn't get the submission, but maintained control of Head. The two returned to their feet, but Ring took it right back to the mat. Ring didn't pass guard, but he did open a cut on Head's face that bled profusely. Referee Herb Dean stopped the fight for a cut check by the doctor, but the fight was allowed to continue. Ring kept up control of the bout on the ground for the rest of the round.

In the third round, Ring stuck with the strategy that worked: a quick takedown. Ring coupled owning the top position with an unending barrage of short hammerfists and elbows. Ring finally stopped the bout by sinking in an airtight rear-naked choke. Dean stopped the bout at 3:33 in the third.

Poirier wins action-packed decision

In a battle of two young featherweights, Dustin Poirier took an action-packed unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 over UFC newcomer, Jason Young.

Young's debut started with a flurry of leg kicks that were answered by a flurry of punches from Poirier. To stop the onslaught, Young tried for a standing kimura but lost the arm as they went to the ground then referred to their feet. Poirier took an upper hand on striking, throwing combinations, but Young was able to get a few licks in.

Young peppered Poirier's legs with kicks, and showed off some fancier kicks early in the second round. Poirier had no answer for Young's more technical attacks until late in the round, when Poirier opened up and threw more strikes. The two started throwing huge strikes as the round neared its end. Poirier finished strong with a takedown, seconds before the horn sounded.

Poirier spent much of the third round trying for a takedown. After he worked and worked for it, Poirier got Young to the ground, but he didn't do much on the ground. Young sprung back to his feet, but the two remained in a clinch. As Poirier worked for another takedown, Young threw a bevy of elbows into Poirier's body. Poirier finally was able to get a takedown as the fight neared its end.

White vlog: Vick, Ice-T, Bradford big UFC fans

UFC president Dana White released the first of his video blogs for UFC 131, and this one is pretty much just White talking to celebrities.

Things to watch for:

-- Lots and lots of F-bombs. If your boss isn't keen on f-bombs being thrown around, don't watch this.

-- About a minute in, St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford telling White that some player is "better than I was at that age." If you can figure out who Bradford is referring to, do tell.

-- Two and a half minutes in, Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick making plans to go to UFC 133 at the Well Fargo Center in Philly. Hopefully, the lockout will be over by then and the fights will be a respite for the Eagles who are in training camp. Right? Hopefully?

-- White appeared at E3, announcing that pay-per-views will soon be available gaming systems like the Xbox.

-- At the end, White talks to Michael Bisping and Jason "Mayhem" Miller about their predictions for Carwin vs. dos Santos. Not surprisingly, the two coaches of the "The Ultimate Fighter 14" don't agree.

Woooo! Cope kicks off TUF 13 finale main event with win

Chris Cope beat his "Team Lesnar" teammate Chuck O'Neil to kick off the main card of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 13 finale in Las Vegas Saturday night. Cope took the fight 30-27 on all three judges' cards.

The two felt each other out for much of the first round, with Cope landing leg kicks and short jabs until Cope hit O'Neil with a left hook and the two moved into a clinch. Cope continued to move well. O'Neil became more aggressive in the final seconds of the round, hitting Cope with a barrage of punches as the first round ended.

O'Neil picked up Cope's leg kick habit in the second round, and Cope tried to employ head and body kicks to create offense. O'Neil tried to use flashy spinning back kicks, but had a hard time landing anything because of Cope's movement and O'Neil's telegraphing of every move.

With the crowd imitating his not-at-all-irritating "wooooos," Cope came on strong in the third round. After realizing the flashy kicks weren't as effective, Cope used an attack based in punches. O'Neil had no answer for Cope's striking combinations.

After the fight, Cope was happy with his performance.

"A lot of people growing up doubted me. How you like me in high-definition?" Cope said. "I don't this for the fame. I don't do it for the money."
